New Sound Selection Wizard

Cognitone introduces a new Sound Selection Wizard that much simplifies the setup of new instruments. A task that often left new users puzzled and frustrated at times. The new wizard now is a major step towards better usability. It's so comfortable that we can hardly think about going back.

Basically it walks you through the three steps of getting a sound set up for an instrument, focussing only on what is required to accomplish that task and keeping all distractions away. You will love it.

The wizard opens from the Instrument menu, or on the magic wand icon of the instrument inspector:

On the start page you decide where from to take the sound.

On the next page, you have the option to create a new device for the loaded plug-in, or detect which existing device description matches the plug-in (previously called "match"). This page is skipped, if a preset was selected on the start page, which already includes a device description.

On the final page, you select the individual sound and adjust its properties, if necessary. This page looks different depending on the type of device. It supports adding new programs or fixed channels with sounds on the fly. In fact, this page is a perfect place to set up a number of sounds in one go (insertion of sound templates included).

After finishing the last page, you are certain that your sound is fully functional. No further guessing required. The wizard is available for global instruments and arrangement (song) instruments alike. That said, setting up a global rack is now a snap.

In addition to the new wizard, the module and channel selection menus of the instrument inspector have been much reduced and simplified to hide some functionality that is offered by the wizard and rack editor anyway. The wizard is available in Harmony Navigator 2.7.10 and Synfire 1.7.18 and later.

Downloads of the new update will be available in your user accounts later today.

We hope you will enjoy the more intuitive sound selection!

Thanks for working to improve synfire.  Wizards can be useful (also because they are idiot-proof).

But there should also exist the option _not_  to use them:

I noticed that the context menu entry "add plugin..."  ("sound assignement" of an instrument in arrangement view) is not available any more.

So for me (as one who simply wants to load a vst plugin and choose some new preset) the new procedure is more laborious:

Before I simply had to choose "add new plugin..." ->  choose the plugin from the instrument context menu - done.

Please add the "add new plugin..."  entry again!

If by old way you mean Drones in MIDI mode (no guest plugin loaded), you would set them up as before (manually). We are testing if listing them with the wizard as a separate choice makes sense. No ETA yet.

For regular audio Drones, you need to add them to the DAW first, then pick them with the wizard.

Yes. I picked Drone with the wizard and then it asked for a VST to load. Is there a way to select just the drone without adding a vst?

Not yet.
