Skype for Web - Synfire Community Meetup

Posted

Hi All.

Follow a chat with Martyn (Blacksun), we are hosting a virtual meetup for Synfire users this thurs evening.

It will take place on Skype for web (no account required) at the following link:

https://join.skype.com/jiN1EJ8onQtq

On this Thursday 17th August at 8pm British Summer Time (BST), UTC +1

Check your timezone at https://time.is/

The plan is to introduce ourselves, what we want from virtual meetups, and do a round of sharing tips and techniques. I'll chair the meetup as it can be difficult when we can't see each other. This first virtual meetup is very much a test of the approach.

Try and connect with video if possible, so we can see you, depending on the quality of your internet connection. Also, note you will need a desktop or laptop to connect. Ipads/Tablets won't work with skype for web.

Hope this works for everyone.

(Moderators - please repost this in a more appropriate sub-forum if required)

Best, Ruchir.

Hi All. The meetup was very low in number of attendees. But the quality was excellent. Especially screen sharing - made a huge difference, as we were able to describe our setups and show them on screen while doing so. The meetup link will remain active. I think anyone can join it. Please reply here if you wanted to join but couldn't (for technical reasons or for timing). Is this something we want to try more regularly?

I found it really useful and as Ruchir said, being able to share your screen rather than wave your hands around in the air trying to describe what you were doing and looking like a maniac was fantastic. Passing the screen sharing to whoever had something to show worked really well and made for a very interactive session. Even after all this time using Synfire, I learnt something new which I can't wait to try out.

There did seem to be an issue with sharing the sound from synfire through skype at least on windows, if anyone has done anything like this in the past, it would be good to hear how you overcame this issue. We didnt spend very long trying to solve it so it might be trivial to fix.

Really would be good to get more people to join, if you wanted to but it was the wrong time, too soon,..etc. just post your interest and availability and we can try work around everyone's requirements.

Thanks to Ruchir for arranging this session and look forward to the next one.

Thanks a lot for your initiative. It is very much appreciated! We could need more of that. Too bad I've been on the road for a couple days. I'll be happy to help promote events like this in advance. Just email to support at cognitone dot com.

I didn't know about Skype for Web yet. Seems like a great platform. We've been trying Google Hangouts, which also works quite ok ((http://www.cognitone.com/community/events.stml)). If Skype is any better, we might switch.

Unfortunately I was on a journey during the last couple of days, so I couldn't attend the conference. Hopefully there's another one soon.

Thanks to Ruchir for taking the initiative and managing this Community Meetup at Skype.

Hi all.

Lets organise another Skype for web. Same link as before (it will remain active).

My proposal is that we make this a regular timeslot. Would a weekday evening, say every Thursday at 8pm BST work for this.

Or should we make it a Saturday/Sunday?

I don't need to be around to initiate or attend the meeting. Anyone can join using the link (no Skype or google account required if using a pc or mac browser). But iPad users will need a Skype account and the Skype app.

What do you say?

Okay here's the plan for the Skype for web meetups:

Online meetup every Thursday at 8PM BST, and every Sunday at 8PM BST, starting this Sunday 3rd September.

Skype for web link as before (it will remain active).

Simply join the group at:

https://join.skype.com/jiN1EJ8onQtq(link is external)

Let's try this out for three weeks and see whether it works.

Andre, can you advertise this on the google group and on your webpage.

Cheers, Ruchir.

Fantastic idea, but that particular time of day is not good for me, and I suspect a set time will never be good for a lot of people. As it will always be active, is there any harm in leaving it 'always on' so people can join if/when they can? Then they can chat, etc, whenever they (and someone else) is on at the same time? Not sure how this works so apologies if this can't be done.

It is always on. The chat works well anytime. But if you want to do video and audio I think it's still worth setting a time. Feel free to schedule anytime that suits and advertise it here. I'll audio/video Skype anyone that's on the forum at 8pm Sunday BST.

Promoted this on Twitter and to the Google Workshops group yesterday. Can't attend today, but will certainly join on occasion. Would prefer a time slot earlier in the day or during afternoon (CET), though.

We are live now. No-one has connected yet. But I'll hang around for a while.

As it happens I've been working in the telecom industry many years ago. The reason there is still no everyday standard for video communication after all the years (decades!) is people are usually shy about showing themselves and their surroundings to strangers. Plus the lighting, sound, language barriers and everything. So if three people show up, ten or more might have considered. Audio is accepted better, but makes no sense here. It will take some time for such a meeting place to get used to.

I really like the idea of a video forum that's always open to join for everyone. Might want to ditch the Google Hangout thing and go with Skype for Web. Will have to do some tests first, though.
