Palette MIDI triggering

Posted

I asked about this years ago and was told it was on the to-do list. Maybe it's already been implimented?

Anyway, it would be super intuitive if one could trigger chords in the Palette from an external pad controller or keyboard. It would be a very efficient way to test chords for songs.

May I suggest (again) a MIDI learn function, whereas the user right clicks on a chord in the palette and by pressing a pad on the external keyboard it automatically maps to it. Then, a user could actually play the chords by tapping each pad.

There are softwares out there that do exactly that. It would really add to the playability of music rather than dragging and dropping everything which literaly kills inspiration and the excitement associated with making music.

But then again, if I'm the only one who ever suggested it, I can see why it's never been done.

Another problem I'm having is that Synfire doesn't recognize my ASIO drivers on my Zoom R24 audio interface. I'm having to use Windows audio which has ridiculous latency.

But anyway, Happy New Year:)

I would like to see this as well.

Currently I use Cthulhu loaded up with upto 61 chords and just experiment with different combinations. Once I have something good I then record the midi out of Cthulhu into an Ableton clip, export to midi and then import to Synfire. Quite a few steps. Would be great to do everything in Synfire.

If there was an intelligent way to layout the pallete chords across 4-5 octaves that would be really great!

This feature suggestion is still current. We expect it to be implemented together with other similar MIDI-related features (snap-to-scale, etc).

As we are at it, how exactly would you use it? If it's just triggering the palette with pads, that'd be easy. But I reckon there's more to your desired workflow than that. How would a typical situation look like?

What exactly do you have in mind?

Pitch range and inversion is controlled by the middle playing range of the instrument.

Hi Andre,

Today I'am using it in a very simple way. When playing the chords I can take my eyes off the screen and stop clicking with the mouse. Its small but makes a huge difference in creativity. Mostly the chords are parts of progressions from other midi files.

A couple of ways I could imagine apply to Synfire:

- Implement progression library (e.g. i-iii-iv-v etc) and then lay the pallete chords out in this way. Either progression after progression serially or one progression with alternative chords

- Assign palette chords to key but reserve black keys for key switchs to reach variations of the chord (e.g. Am or Am7 with black key)

- Assign some keys to key switches which would allow different scales to be tried out directly from the keyboard without going back to the screen and mouse.

I'd be happy with just key to chord but something more intelligent perhaps like above would be great.

Hi Andre,

It would be useful (i'm hoping) to be able to trigger chord palettes from external pads in real time and stack them if possible for big chords. As in-press two pads at the same time to trigger 2 palettes. I'm sure there are many other uses for real-time note input as well. The idea being that we can use the AI system if we have to, but when not using it, note and chord input can be done in real-time from an external controller. The snap to scale idea you mentioned is great too.
