Could the Mac OS crash report be useful to Cognitone?

We could copy and paste the Apple's crash log, in case it can be useful to Synfire development and bug fixing.

Thanks. Crash reports are always helpful.

Please don't post Apple crash reports to a public forum. Email them (in a ZIP) to support at cognitone dot com. Thanks again.

A new build #9 is online. We addressed a potential issue that your crash report pointed to. Although we had no way to reproduce your crashes on our machines, it is possible this fixes it on your Mac.

Thank you Andre. I’m reinstalling MacOS and it’s taking more time than usual (slow Internet connection today, maybe). As soon as it’s finished I’ll test it!

Andre,

unfortunately Synfire keeps on crashing.

- formatted the hd and reinstalled MacOS High Sierra from scratch (the crashes occurred also in Sierra)
- installed Synfire 1.8.3#9
- launched Synfire, saved the new empty Arrangement in Documents > Synfire > Projects (a folder created by myself). So far, everything was ok.
- created a new Progression standalone window
- Cmd-S, the MacOS dialog box opens
- created a new folder "Progression" in Documents > Synfire
- named the new file "Test Progression" and clicked OK
- Crash.

I'll send you the crash report via mail after posting this reply, hope it will help.

_Roberto

Thanks. At least it crashes in a different place now.

I still can't reproduce the crash here. Not on El Capitan, Sierra, or High Sierra. No matter how often I try. Always thought macOS was behaving identical on any hardware, but obviously that's not true. Why would it crash on an iMac and not on a Mac Pro and a MacBook Air?

I wish I had the definitive answer...

I can only add that sometimes crashes occur for the weirdest things. PreSonus Notion 6, for example, crashed if you selected the Italian or German language in the Preferences. Maybe Notion was wary of the Italians and the Germans? ;-)

Seriously, I also thought the problem might depend on the architecture of the iMac, but I'm not competent at all!

EDIT: I sent to Cognitone Support the MacOS crash report via e-mail

The only certainty is that Synfire crashes in file save operations. For the rest it is as solid as a rock.

If it can help, on tomorrow I could test the save operation on an older (2006 or so) 32bit iMac with Snow Leopard.

What is the full path to where you are trying to save your file? Maybe there is some special character in there that is causing the problem?

~/Documents/Synfire Pro/myfoldername/myfilename

I thought also of an issue caused by the Italian localization of OSX, but once a hundred Synfire won't crash, although I can not replicate the successful attempt: so it should not be something "local". Now I'm going to try on my father's older iMac. I'll see how it acts there, please hold on...

Test completed.

iMac 17" 2Ghz Core 2 Duo with MacOS 10.7.5, Synfire 1.8.3 #9

Absolutely no crash, solid like a rock and very well performing.

Opened half a dozen windows, saved and saved again, performed Save As in nested subfolders too. No crashes at all. Quitted and relaunched Synfire, done all the above again, a dozen of windows opened, saved and re-saved, windows closed, reopened: no crash: on the older iMac Synfire works like a dream.

It must be the Late 2015 iMac architecture, I can't explain otherwise.

I can't remember exactly, but my father's Mac should be a late 2006 machine.

The only workaround is to disable the "Native File dialogs" option. The GUI also freezes using this trick, but much more rarely.

Take your time to fix it at Cognitone, but fix it: I was looking for a software of this type already since I read De La Motte's The Study of Harmony... ;-)
