Selecting Multiple Containers Includes Multiple Selection Of Last Selected Parameter

Posted

I make an interpretation modification to an instrument.

I would now like to use that modification in all instances of the instrument in my song sections/ containers. I can't just drag the instrument in to other containers, because that will also replace the figure.

I would like to be able to select all the containers (which appears to be possible with Control Click) and then while they are selected have the change I am making in one apply to all. This could be the case if the selected containers also were aware of the parameter in the instrument of the container I am viewing. Which also seems true, since if I go to another container, the last parameter in focus on a specific instrument remains highlighted.

I know can copy/ paste to each container one by one. By why couldn't I either update across containers all at once, or alternatively, select all or some containers and then simply drag the parameter to the highlighted continer(s) in the song window time ruler, instead of having to open the container and drag to the parameter?

Don't drag the whole instrument, drag only the interpretation parameter (the 'LED') to the other containers. Hold down the CTRL key while dragging to copy the parameter. Dragging without CTRL key moves the parameter (i. e. it will be deleted at the original container).

Thank you, Juergen ... but I understand about dragging with and without control.

Are you saying that if I highlight all the sections in HN2 and then control drag a parameter to where they are highlighted, in one operation I can move that parameter to all instruments in the different sections?

My experience is that that doesn't work. I can only drag one parameter to one section at a time. If I have 8 sections and I set up an instrument (or change it later), that means (leaving out Take and Figure), to replicate the instrument in the 7 remaining sections I have to Control Drag 7 parameters 7 times for a total of 49 Control drags to just fix one instrument. If I had to do that for all 8 instruments ... thats 343 Control Drags postentially.

That doesn't seem like a very friendly 'work flow,' wouldn't you agree?

I would propose something more like selecting as many sections as you wanted in the ruler and then some type of key combination click with the parameter of interest to update all the other instances of the instrument with the same parameters. Now my potential steps are reduced from 343 to 49.

I'd like even better if I could 'lasso' select multiple parameters in one instrument and do the same thing, updating all the other instances of that instrument. Now we are down to a very friendly 7 steps.

No, I didn't want to say that. My answer referred only to that part of your post where you said that you "can't just drag the instrument in to other containers, because that will also replace the figure." If you want to copy all parameters of an instrument except the figure parameter from one section to another I see two different ways:

  • Copy all parameters of the instrument except the figure parameter one by one. (by Copy/Paste or by CTRL-drag)

    or
  • Save the figure parameter of the destination section (say section B) in a third section  (say section C), then copy the whole instrument from the original section to the destination section (i.e. from section A to B) and then move the saved figure parameter back from section C to B.

Yes, I understand about the 343 step solution. I just don't think it is satisfactory. Do the math.

Save the figure parameter of the destination section (say section B) in a third section  (say section C), then copy the whole instrument from the original section to the destination section (i.e. from section A to B) and then move the saved figure parameter back from section C to B.

I understand this as well. This works until you want to make some change after you have already worked on your figures. It is a work around. If you have 8 sections and 8 instruments, this would only take ... subtracting the 1 'template' section,  7 instruments moved into 7 sections = 49 steps. You couldn't even make this shorter by copying the whole sections 7 times, for then you'd have to drag 7x8 `= 56 figures back into the new 7 section, rename 7 section and delete your former 7 sections ... for 70 steps.

I did not say it can't be done. i said the that the way of doing it is very time consuming and not really user friendly.

I do not know how long you or others here have been using computers. I have been using them for quite a while. Multiple selection, copy to section, etc., are common concept that go across all programs. They are implemented for user convenience and work flow efficiency. There is no reason to think that this program would not be capable of doing such common things or that users wouldn't benefit from it.

That is why I made this suggestion in the 'Suggestion' forum of HN2. If you are happy with 343 steps, that's OK with me. But I am not happy with it.

I agree with you Prado, this would be a valuable tool.   I would very much like a paintbrush and erasor tool, to create or select certain notes.

I would like to see global changes with a high degree of selectability incorporated into it.

In Logic, I will often make several copies of the same track, and isolate them into4 - 6 tracks of monophin lines, by successively selecting and isolating the highest or lowest note (one of Logic selectabilty feature).

also the select by subposition.  (quantize, then select subposition, then unquantize).   These I individually change or perfrom Logic Transform functions too.  I then reassemble the 4 - 6 tracks back into one.. The results can be vaguely to profoundly noticeable..

And they certainly take the 'computer' out  and add "humanize'  to the piece.

You know this still brings us back to the chicken/egg story... What are Cognitone products going to be,  adjuncts to a DAW.  How much individual editing cabalites does SFP need to have.. For me right now, it means importing/cross importing files back/forth between differnt programs..

How self contained are Cognitone products to be?  Perhaps if there was a simple 'drag to new application and location' feature. Like Stylus, Music Lab and a few other products use. This would go a long way.  Exporting, then importing, changing channels, redefining CC events (lets forget about SYSEX for now). drawing in expression events etc. could be an easier process.
