HN2 or Synfire installation fails on Windows 8

There's an issue on Windows 8 only, where the installers for HN2 2.8 or Synfire 1.9 would take a minute or so to start, but ultimately fail to do so. An error message pops up saying:

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected.

This occurs only on Windows 8. The installer runs fine on Windows 7 and Windows 10. We are working on this, but there is no indication as to what causes this problem, which makes this a difficult issue to solve.

In the meanwhile, Windows 8 users can work around the problem:

  1. Login to Windows 8 with administrator permissions
  2. Run the installer up to the error message shown above and do NOT click it away
  3. Change compatibility mode for SETUP.exe in C:\ProgramData\Cognitone\Setup to "Windows 7"
  4. Run that SETUP.exe manually from that place (confirm UAC dialog and run SETUP to the end)
  5. Now dismiss the error above message
  6. Set compatibility mode of HN2.exe or Synfire.exe in C:\Program Files\Cognitone\Synfire to "Windows 7"

This will get you started for now. Please contact support, if you still encounter problems.
