HN2 or Synfire installation fails on Windows 8

This has been fixed with Synfire 1.10 and HN 2.8.1

There's an issue on Windows 8 only, where the installers for HN2 2.8 or Synfire 1.9 would take a minute or so to start, but ultimately fail to do so. An error message pops up saying:

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected.

This occurs only on Windows 8. The installer runs fine on Windows 7 and Windows 10. We are working on this, but there is no indication as to what causes this problem, which makes this a difficult issue to solve.

In the meanwhile, Windows 8 users can work around the problem:

  1. Login to Windows 8 as an administrator.
  2. Run the installer up to the error message shown above and do NOT click it away.
  3. Goto C:\ProgramData (enter that path into Explorer by hand, if ProgramData is invisible), navigate to \Cognitone\Setup and set compatibility mode of SETUP.exe to "Windows 7"(right-click on it and open 'Properties' where's  a tab to set compatibility modes)
  4. Run C:\ProgramData\Cognitone\SETUP.exe by double-clicking on it. Let it finish.
  5. Now dismiss the error above message.
  6. Goto C:\Program Files\Cognitone and set compatibility mode of HN2.exe (or: Synfire.exe) in to "Windows 7" same way as you did above.
  7. For Synfire only, be sure you have iLok License Manager installed (
  8. The program will now run on Windows 8
