Using sequencer VST's

Posted

I’m planning to use VST’s in SP for drums and percussion (MeldaDrummer and Maschine). These plugins work in the same way as most plugins with integrated sequencers, by triggering sequences with midi notes.

In a DAW this is simple, but in SP I will need a different approach, as the trigger notes need to be absolute, not relative.

I want to use SP alone, without syncing or drones. Can anyone point me towards some information on strategies that might help me?

For example, I wonder whether its possible to use keyswitches as the sequence triggers.

Although I’m still taking my first steps with SP, I like to plan ahead and get concepts straight before I get my hands dirty. So any advice is appreciated, thanks!

What I do is have a midifile made in a DAW with all the keychanges in there and import as static midi.

Now you have the figures to play with.

you can use static note symbols (brown) for triggering drums and effects. these don't map to harmony and never change.

But you do still have to be careful with the playing ranges because if you have a static note outside the ranges, Synfire will still change the note value. I think it's a good idea (particularly with keyswitches) to set all the playing ranges to the same values, i.e. the absolute range of the keyswitches.
