Why does SF copy the instruments when creating a sketch ?

Why doesn't synfire use the instruments used in the arrangement for a sketch ?

It seems that when creating a sketch, to play chord progressions live, SF doubles up the used plugins.

Why is that ?

A Sketch is independent of an arrangement. You can save and load it at any time.

There is currently no "private sketch" that would share the arrangement's sounds. The idea sounds interesting, but is very hard to implement (what happens to the sketch when you delete instruments from the arrangement?).

I wouldn't mind if the instrument would dissapear from the sketch...that's what a 'sketch' is for. It's great to try out some chords 'on the fly' without doubling the instruments.
When you're in a certain stage that you almost max out your cpu, it's not possible anymore to use the sketch. So cpu wise it would be very good.
Maybe it could be optional ?

It will do so if your arrangement uses only sounds of the shared rack. Because the sounds at the shared rack are available at every arrangement and every sketch. Only if you use private sounds in your arrangement Synfire creates a new private rack when you make a sketch.

But even if you use private sounds the CPU and RAM load is not a big issue, IMO. Most sample player recognize automatically if sounds are already loaded into the RAM at another instance of the VSTi. They don't load the samples more than once. At least I have observed this at Kontakt and Vienna Instruments.

I'm not talking samples here, I hardly use any samplers/romplers.
I'm also not using shared racks, for the very same reason, that those plugs will be loaded, and taking up cpu while not in use.
I like new sounds with every new project, and 'sketch' with those new sounds.

I have problems with the sketches too, I use an access virus and hardware synth. The vst/au tat controls the virus can only be loaded once. I ave a similar issue when trying to relocate from the engine to the daw drone.
