Chords don't make that much a difference in pop music. It's the melody, rhythm and voice. The ever same 4 chords give that warm and fuzzy feeling that people love so much with their favorite fast food. Never try something too fancy with your cheeseburgers, or nobody will buy.
Chords are more significant with jazz, but even there, they are merely a wallpaper without melodies and rhythm.
