Harmony and Figure to Output - How to Understand

Posted

Hi,

I've got snippet output that I don't understand.

From this Harmony:

and this Figure:

I get this Output:

The Output is the 5th of the first chord and the Maj 3rd of the second chord.  The Figure though is sitting on 3 in each case.

How can a 5th be the result?     What am I missing?

Bass symbols are at 3 rather than zero

Yes, as I stated.

How is that producing the 5th?   (Bb of the Ebm7 chord)

Yes.   Consider the 2nd chord, Dbmaj7.

With the Bass figure set at 3, the diatonic count up of 1,2,3 goes Db, Eb, F.
F is what I expect, F is what is there.    OK, that I think I understand.

Now consider the 1st chord, Ebm7.

With the Bass figure set at 3, the diatonic count up of 1,2,3 goes  ?

I don't see any way to arrive at Bb with a count up of 1,2,3.

If you can, please explain this to me fully like I'm a child, because I'm not getting it from short hints!

Thank you.

Voice leading controls which note is finally picked. It is trained to avoid certain notes depending on context and instrument. It's part of the AI in Synfire. If you want to map the scale directly you need to bypass Interpretation.

Thank you, that is good information that I'll be keeping in mind!

So, I bypassed Interpretation, and the result was 4ths instead of 5ths.  (Ab is the 4th of Eb, Gb is the 4th of Db).

Should my thought process be:

0 is the root

1 is "one unit above" the root, which is the 2nd

2 is "two units above" the root, which is the 3rd

3 is "three units above" the root, which is the 4th

etc.  ?

And are the units in this case units of the 'Horizontal' scale:

?
Intuitively, I feel like labeling 2=2nd, 3=3rd, 4=4th degree of scale etc. would be more immediately obvious to me.     But if zero-based thinking is necessary to consistently understand how Synfire works, then I will work to internalize that.
