new user since June ;-)still havent found time and courage to set up synfire pro -( I'm lost

Posted

hello experts

Maybe some of you will help me to push myself into the right direction, I'm using many daws since years (more than 10 years..) but I'm very intimated by synfire pro I bought in June. Yes i read the first manual chapters but once I reach the page Audio set up, my head is starting to burn !

maybe a nice person in Switzerland may guide me a bit ? or maybe someone with a step by step teaching approach may help ? yes i've seen videos but I don't which one to see first (and apply first) and have seen them ... I'm sure all knowledge is spread around but I don't find the logic sequence and where to start. I would like to use my korg m3 and avoid vst for the time being...

there should be wizard to set up this synfire tool , should not be ?

Helllllllllllllllllllp ;-)

Hiya and welcome...I'm sure together with everyone here we will get you up and running quickly.

Just a few questions first.. Are you using windows or mac? Which daw do you use? Is the m3 capable of changing sound via midi and is it multitimberal? What version of synfire do you have, pro r express?

thank you sir, I'm of course responsible for this delay in using this great soft, I knew it won't be easy and many distractions available in my little studio did not help ;-) (some nice analogues synth/drum machines) but I want to concentrate more in the harmony, song structure, melody than boom boom chack (once the harmony/melody are there boom boom chack can start !), if you could drive me to the right tutorial or chapter to complete this set up (this will motivate me to learn more...)

To answer your questions:

Are you using windows or mac?

Windows

Which daw do you use?

Ableton mainly (but have reaper and studio one pro)

Is the m3 capable of changing sound via midi and is it multitimberal?

yes and yes (korg m3 to be precise), I see it was supported by synfire with template set up if I'm not wrong

What version of synfire do you have, pro r express?

Pro

P.S: I'm in CET zone so I will have some delay to come back to you (as I'm working in the day time)

Any hints, links to the right information is welcome !

thank you !

Hey Solaris sorry about the delay....

There is a video about setting up synfire with ableton in the video section and on the youtube channel. Start with following that but for you there are a couple of changes needed due to your real hardware synths.

There are many ways of achieving what you want, I offer one solution which is similar to hOw I work ( I use vsti, an access virus and a spectralis ).

In the video you will see adding a drone to a track in synfire, and setting up the drone to load a vst ( actually done in synfire ). In your case tick the check box to make the drone a midi drone. You will still need to select your m3 instrument device description ( just like in the vid a vst instrument device is selected).

Lastly in ableton you will need to route the midi out of the track with the drone on it to another midi track. On the second midi track add an ableton external instrument just like you do to get ableton to connect to your m3. This ensures that ableton renders in real time when exporting your final tack.

Don't forget to setup a midi in device and channel so you can play the keyboard.

Sorry that's a bit rushed, another option is to get synfire to connect via real midi ports to you synth and get ableton to record the audio, but with this there is no way to get the midi into ableton.

Post back with how you are getting on...

Is a link to using ableton with the inbuilt ableton synths via a midi drone which might help after watching the official vid

This kick off is very much appreciated !

let me try asap and come back with feedback, thank you

Now I understand: if you can manage a spectralis, you can manage anything in this world ! really a tough sequencer and OS, I was using using mine as a sound module mainly and then I decided it was not enough and found 1 e-mu Eii (with the SD card reader).

let me hear your songs/instrumentals please !

Solaris

P.S: funny that Blacksun is supporting Solaris ;-)

ok thank you very much black sun !, I was indeed able to use the drone with some vst and sync SFP with live easily.

Now as I see it's possible to move forward  I want to start from the beginning without adding more set up complexity with even using the internal Gm synth but I can't hear any sound (the midi light is flashing tough on the instrument...).

I'm searching on the forum as I'm sure this happens often ;-) if you or someone else can point me to the right thread I'm of course more than grateful !

Update: I find all details in this FAQ !
