Phrase Library with free chord progressions

Posted

I got myself this free collection of MIDI files: https://unison.audio/product/unison-essential-famous-midi-chord-progressions/ (yes it's from those clever guys that sell single major and minor chords as MIDI files) and made it into a Synfire phrase library.

For not getting anyone (neither Cognitone nor myself) into legal trouble, I've removed the attached files from the posts.

Chords are free for all and you dont distribute the original files. They are giving these progressions away for free as a promotion for their products. If you credit them in the phrase pool comment that should be fine.

Not really. If the file contains the original MIDI takes, file names, folder structure and naming, it amounts to a blatant copy of their product (merely a format conversion). I have no idea if this is legally an infringement, but it's certainly not nice.

You may write down the chord progressions and then add them to a Synfire library. It doesn't matter which tools you use. Just don't publish a copy of their work.

Or just point our users to the download page and let everyone import the file themselves. Maybe share the import settings here, too.

Checked their page again. They offer a freebie in return for registering an account at their site ("Add To Cart"). You may not be charged money, but you give them your email address in return (which is worth a lot if you are in the business of selling downloadable stuff). It's not a free download.

The only legal way to share a library with these progressions is to write them down and enter them manually, use your own labels, ordering, etc. In other words: Create a new collection of chord progressions yourself.
