A scissors tool might be very helpful. I find that by staggering note starts and lengths in blocked out chords, you can easily control the density of a piece which opens up the door to more liberal harmonics functions.
You may want scissors tool to be intellengent,so you can force cut notes at the end of a particular chord, and chord that aren't harmonically related to previous chord will adjust to fit the new chord,
Delaying onset time, durations and length of duration, are all extremely valuabe tools in humainizing a piece. I often spend a 1/4 of my time at Loic Pro doing his to tnoes..
If the previous cord is related to next chord that note will play through.
