I have an instance of Halion 4 that had 4 instruments on channels 1 thru 4. I have added another instrument to channel 5 and have assigned that to a category and renamed the description to the actual instrument name. I have also 'saved as...' my setup.
When I restart Synifre, the instrument is still on channel 5 in Halion, but it is no longer assigned to the category in Synfire. It has also reverted to the name 'Channel 5'. Even re-loading my manually saved rack has the same effect.

How did you assign it? Did you add a new sound to a device description, or did you patch the sound directly in the instrument inspector?
Does this error still occur when you save the device with Device >> Save before quitting Synfire? (if yes, there may be a bug)

I clicked Global Setup, then on Device Descriptions tab I selected my Halion description. Then from the Sounds column, I highlighted Channel 5 and dragged it to E-Guitar Distoted and then renamed Channel 5 appropriately.
I did not do Device >> Save as I never have before, but I just tried it with same results. Think this has only happenned since 1.6.6 as I have not had this problem before.

This is still not working so must be a bug. However, I have found that by using Device > Save As and giving it my own file name will work, but only if I manually open that file after starting Synfire.
What I mean is, the settings are not saved automatically as I thought they should be

The settings are saved automatically. New devices may not be saved only if SF crashes before geting a chance to save the rack when the software quits.
Do you have more than one file for this device? Synfire will only load the first instance it can find. If there are multiple instances in different folders using the same filename, the file you last edited may have been ignored on startup.
The two folders searched for devices are:
/Library/Application Support/Synfire Pro/Config/Devices
/Users/<yourname>/Documents/Synfire Pro/Config/Devices

I had the same device description in /Users/<yourname>/Documents/Synfire Pro/Config/Devices/Old and /Users/<yourname>/Documents/Synfire Pro/Config/Devices/Recovered which were necessary when I was having trouble before. I have now re-named them and now it seems to be fine.
It must having been picking one of those up which seems strange as surely it should have used the default folder? This is all very complex and confusing and I hope it's simplified in the next version!

Yes, there could be a warning message if multiple copies of the same device are found in the same folder.
Never keep backup copies of devices in subfolders of the Config folder. Synfire will find these and load them, which replaces instances that were loaded previously.
