Good news is that i got the midi working very quickly. I'm not at the stage yet where i'm trying to hook up my Cubase 5 to HN i just want to use General midi to preview the chord progressions i'm going to be making. But i can't get any sound out of HN.

^I've already read and tried that article but that didnt solve my problem. I am using an extrenal audio soundcard (Motu 24 i/o). I am able to hear system sounds on my win xp sp 2 system (i.e. when put a flash drive into my system i can hear little sound effect) BUT when i double click a midi file and windows media player pops up i don't hear any sound. On the other hand i can open that same midi file in itunes (which is what i use to play tracks) and i can hear the midi file fine.
I really want to purchase HN but i want to make sure i can get it working on my system first. Please advise. Thank you!!

The built-in GM synth's audio signal is probably not routed to your external Motu interface. Or it is muted altogether in the Windows system mixer?

I can't actually get the windows system mixer to show up ("Volume Control") It says there are no active mixer devices available...yet audio and midi work great in Cubase for me...so what should i do?
Thanks for the response.

Sounds to me like the Motu drivers and system software seem to have messed the Windows sound setup. Isn't there a replacement for the system mixer from Motu somewhere in your Windows system settings?
Alternatively you can open Cubase, load a track with a GM synth, have it listen to a loopback driver's MIDI port (e.g. "Internal Midi 1"), and connect the GM device description in HN2 to that loopback port. Be sure you arm the Cubase track for recording, or incoming MIDI will not be audible.

Yes there is but in the mixer window there is no mixer channel for the internal gm midi synth on the computer.

This video shows how to setup a loopback driver:

HTH
BTW: In the windows mixer, the GM synth is often subsumed under "Wave Instrument" or "MIDI" or similar.

So i tried opening Cubase then opening up HN but HN won't open..an error message pops up that says "Failed Opening Midi System [error 2] Possibly built in GS Wavetable Synth is blocked from using your audio driver the program will quit now"
So what do i do now?
Thanks for the help again..i really badly want to get this to work so i can purchase the product.
EDIT
ok so i opened up HN first this time then opened up Cubase and it didnt crash HN. Cool. But i followed all the steps in that video and no synth pops up in HN (i'm using hypersonic in cubase) like it does in the example. What can i do?
Also it'd be really helpful if you guys did your videos for a variety of different DAW's including cubase.
EDIT
OK!!!!!!!!!! I got it working. I have absolutley no idea how but i'm getting sound out of it and i'm experimenting with it.
My first question now that i've got it working is why is it when i have a simple chord progression in the song window just C Em C C C C it goes all crazy and plays tons of different melodies etc when i just want to hear straight chords?

If you want plain, sustained chords, enable the chords-only mode in the Playback menu.
If you downloaded the demo before yesterday, please also download the latest version 2.1.1 we just published. It includes various bug fixes concerning the chords-only playback and voice leading.
Your Cubase seems to use ASIO drivers that don't allow multiple programs to stream audio at the same time. The internal GM synth is blocked if Cubase already locked the AISIO driver and HN mourns about this at startup. We are trying to remove this dependency from HN as soon as possible.
We consider the loopback MIDI driver a temporary solution only, because it is very laborious and unintuitive to setup. It will be replaced by a much improved VST/AU support in the future.

^Cool how soon is that going to happen?

We don't know a release date yet, but we are already very busy working on it.
