Current behavior of "New From Selection" needs more attention +takes more time to crop what exactly you select.
i think it would be more useful if command will also divide the grouped figures in the selected area, according to start and end points of selection.
just for example please see the gif.

Hmm. There is an intention behind segments to keep notes together exactly to prevent this. Segments are designed to be able to overlap phrase and container bounds. Your suggestion would break that rule.
It may make sense for splitting freshly imported phrases only.

Every keyboard shortcut would require a Command key (or Ctrl on Windows) at least ...

this two suggestions seems related to me so i will continue in here
split figures at span tool position for example with Ctrl+K ( K always looks like scissors to me )
this feature would be great too
for demonstration
