Hello Cognitos,
I decided to use just plug ins with synfire instead of linking to a DAW for now.
I do not know how it happen but I cannot remember how to use the nano keyboard to create midi input.
Here I am sending the screens maybe some one can shed some light.
I am able to record, but I cannot hear what I am playing. Midi thru is checked.
Is not the ASIO driver because I am not using the DAW. Any solutions jump to mind?
I would appreciated it.

You are using the loopback driver for input, which seems dangerous. What happens if you disable this?

Hello Supertonic
If I only keep nano and new device I am able to record but I cannot hear what I am playing.
In order to listen to the recording, I have to go back to share rack.
How do I connect the nano to be able to record?
Thanks

When you select "New Device" and have nanoKEY enabled for input and MIDI Through is on, you should be able to play the nanoKEY and see the red input indicator flickering.
You should also hear the sound you select on "New Device" while you play (on the Device Descriptions tab).

Thank you Supertonic
Why is it that I cannot select kontak as the device and nano as the input. Is it nano supposed to trigger midi that will in turn trigger Kontak?
When I have Nano enabled for input with the new device, I get no sound when recording...
Annoying problem for sure
Mo., 03.12.2012 - 22:57 Permalink
Hmm. You dont need to "select nanoKey as input for Kontakt 4". The ports you select for a device are OUTPUT ports (A B C D). These are plug-ins, drones or external MIDI interfaces.
Input arrives at Synfire regardless, if you have the nanoKEY enabled for input use.
Maybe you confused that?

Here is a shot of my set up. I can record. To listen what I record I have to disconnect nano from devices and select engine node 1.
Can you point to the process step by step Supertonic?
Di., 04.12.2012 - 09:12 Permalink
Thanks for the picture.
Disconnect nanoKEY from New Device and connect the port that hosts your plug-in or synth instead. That will do it.

Thanks Supertonic....the problem still lives
I went ahead and disconnect the nano from new device. Please look at the shot.
I can record but I cannot hear what I am recording or playback after. I really appreciate the help with this one.
I am really puzzled by this.
Mi., 05.12.2012 - 09:30 Permalink
You still have it connected - disconnect it from everything. MIDI input does not need any connections. Connections are for OUTPUT only.

I am not understanding Supertonic,
Please take a look at the diagrams and tell me.
I do not have to select the nano name at all?

I do not have to select the nano name at all?
Yes!
Enabling it for Input is enough.

supertonic answered already but may be it make sense if you see visually
please see the jpeg
i hope it helps

Really strange!
After creating global sounds, the device description is on both screens: midi and share rack.
I can record but not hear myself!. I am giving up for the time being.
Thank Soundcase for taking the time to draw the diagram. It is clear for me as to what to do. I just cannot get rid of the kontak sound device, if I do there is no sound at all!
Do., 06.12.2012 - 09:27 Permalink
That looks right now to me... Silly question, have you selected midi through on the playback menu?
If you record something does it populate the figures even though it doesn't sound?
Do., 06.12.2012 - 18:46 Permalink
Yes Blacksun midi through is on!
Yes the figure appears after I finished recording. During recording I cannot hear what I am playing. Afterwards I am able to hear what I played!
I am thinking it may be a bug..or do you think I have to reinstall Synfire?
Is very frustrating for sure. I would appreciate if someones tells me how to reset all ports and engines to start from the original state again.

Someone help please...
Now is not possible to record....is this a bug Supertonic ?

Try first to make the most basic setup (easy) with the nanokeyboard with "the internal GM synth"
If you managed to get it recording..than use this knowledge again how to connect the keyboard with a setup for the kontakt Vsti
1) nanokeyboard -> midi tab ..tickbox MIDI input
2) output--> Ports Currently assigned to Connector A,B,C, D: --> choose microsoft Gs wavetable synth ( if you have windows )
3) Choose as device description--> Internal GM synth ( see comments (above the buttons))
Now it must be possible to record the windows microsoft GS synth in SFP/E
Do., 06.12.2012 - 23:27 Permalink
Thank you Janando for the assistance.
I followed it and yes I am able to record a take but I am unable to hear what I am playing!
It seems to me really strange!
See the shot now. Why is it that I cannot hear what I am recording?
Fr., 07.12.2012 - 00:11 Permalink
With this setup of GM in windows you must be able to hear the arrangement file : arrangement demo 1.cognac
But i get also no sound !.. i use the experimental audio engine
It seems that something has go wrong ...probably by Cognitone ?

You choose the right output : Microsoft GS wavetable Synth , But the WRONG device description--> it must be "Internal GM synth" ( it is default included in SynfireP/E installation)( see under "loaded descriptions: " in the audio& midi setup screen)
Try this out .. perhaps it is working now for your SFP ?
note: it is not working anymore for my experimental engine i installed for HAlion 4 to test out the" relocate" function for the drone

Eduardo..yes frustration can also lead to anger.. in the case of when people are unfriendly towards to you who help you.
It takes a lot of time ( study ) to find out how the soundassigning exactly works.
But in Windows you cannot at the same time open your DAW ( cubase, etc ) and Synfire P/E with the same audio driver.
So there is a workaround for this.
Try to go back to the most easy setup --> if this works than go to Kontakt Vsti... assign your device description
Study one of the video about soundassigning on the Cognitone site ...Kontakt is een sampler..there is no premade ready device description for it i thought.
So you must do a special "device extracting procedure" i think for the Kontakt Vsti as basis for setting up a device description and assigning the sounds with one of the 16 channels. ( see one of the video's )
It is complicated the soundassigning , so don't blame yourself and have patience, but first you must understand the most basic setup ( GM ) to go further to the more advanced setups.

@eduardo: The Internal GM Synth device has nothing to do with your Kontakt plug-in. It makes no sense to connect these.
You need to connect the Kontakt device with the Engine port that hosts your Kontakt plug-in. Be sure you edit the device description to include the sounds you have loaded into the plug-in.
You do not need to do anything else that this and it should work.

Thank you colleagues for helping.
I am pretty good at following instructions, and this is beaten me.
I have my kontak plug in up and running. Recording is the only problem. The nano does not work when I create a global rack using kontak.
Thank you Janando for the suggestions. I do not have the nano link to a DAW (Sonar). Before using Kontak and creating a new device I was able to record with Synfire and HN2.
Supertonic I would really appreciate if you send me a diagram. I followed Souncase's and still I could not make it work.
Is someone out there who has Kontak instruments in the global rack who has experience problems recording?
Should reinstall Synfire Supertonic?

Hi eduardo
i created a simple step by step video tutorial for the kontakt + global rack
i hope it helps
Fr., 07.12.2012 - 22:42 Permalink
Soundcase, I appreciate so much that you took time away from activities you enjoy doing to create this detail video for me.
It is very helpful. Thank you. I now understand more how I can have the defaul synth and Kontak. I will definetively try it today.
Best music wishes to you!

Soundcase how did you reset the sound devices? I am looking at the video and I do not find that command.
Sa., 08.12.2012 - 17:22 Permalink
Hi eduardo
there is no specific Command to reset devices at once.. as i know,
actually also you don't need to reset anything globally...
i have 200+ Device Descriptions... i removed them
( after Backup them ofc. )
for more clear explanation in the video ..
but...
i see its caused more confusion..
so lets forget the "Reset" things...
...
just create Device Descriptions (D.D.) and connect to your Kontakt or Synth as in video.
i am attaching one DD its ready to use for "Global Rack"
put this D.D. in the "Devices" folder:
( in the Arrangement window click to Edit / Preferences / Files...
see " Configuration: " folder path there. )
when you open that "Config" folder you'll see the Devices folder in it.
so put this DD in to the Devices folder and run Synfire ..rest is as like in the video add a shared rack add Kontakt
then add your instruments in kontakt, choose proper midi channels for the instruments then connect to the D.D.
btw. as Janamdo said this specific to the global instruments ..
when you want to extend your D.D. list with your favourite instruments you need to create one DD for per instruments.
for example lets assume you want to create 3 more D.D. for your fav. Bass , Guitar , Synth
procedure is similar
in Global Setup / Device Descriptions / Loaded Descriptions:
right click choose "New" and rename it MyFavBass then go to Internal Gm synth find a Bass patch there and Copy it
then paste in to your MyFavBass "Sounds:" pane ...reanme this sound in "Name:" pane as you want .
one important thing at this point if the instrument has specific "Range" as some of Orchestral kontakt patches has
you need to modify instrument range manually or you need to use Synfire's "Scan" option to find proper range for patch.
now
add another Shared Rack add another Kontakt to this new rack and load your Bass instrument.
connect your MyFavBass D.D. to this rack.
same procedures for second and third ones.
shortly:
1 create one D.D. for per instruments
2 create Shared Rack load your kontakt or synth and load your patch / preset
3 connect to D.D.
once you get familiar with this process youll see creating your own D.D. its much more easy than writing / reading ..
:)

I think the global rack is limited in use.
It is used for the sketches , harmonizer and library ..
So i think, if you want to make arrangments you, can make a device description for general use for Kontakt ( you can use it over and over again for a new arrangment too) and forget the global rack device description.
Better is to make some device description more if you use all the time the same instruments in Kontakt
The global rack must be stay in the default state as Cognitone it has made. ( GM sounds )
Ofcourse you can improve the default global rack soundquality with the same sounds in Kontakt.
You are free to still use a global rack with all kinds of sounds, but the library is based on GM sounds.. so if you make a library by imported GM midi files ..you must use the global rack for GM to listening to the phrases.
It is better to bypass the global rack and make Device Descriptions (DD) without a global rack
The number of sounds is limited to 7 only for the Global rack. but SFP has 260 instrumenttracks ?
