I know you can directly import a SMF as a new Basis Sketch to a Song. I know that you can add a saved Basis Sketch to an existing song, provided you have some room for instruments among the 8 slots or are willing to change out unprotected instruments.
I would like to see the ability to add a new instrument to a song and from that dialong, probably a right click context on that instrument, directly import a SMF to that instrument in the song. The import feature would be unchanged except that you would be restricted to importing a single channel/ track of the SMF.

On further thought, my suggestion would be to add the operation 'import phrase' to the context menu of the selected instrument in the instrument rack.
In a certain sense, to me it is more logical that the operation is available in the Instrument menu than the Phrase menu, but I won't quibble. If it were in a context menu available directly on each instrument it would be both accessible and intuitive.
