Hi Supertonic
I use Synfire in two versions
One in my old laptop macbook pro with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and another in my imac desktop with Mountain Lion 10.8.5
The png corresponds to the snow leopard,i never had problems with previous versions and in the mountain lion i have not installed yet the last update

Try 'Repair Permissions' with Apple's Disk Utility. And after that install Synfire once again.

You don't need to be connected to internet to repair permissions... A good idea is to 'repair' or at least 'verify' disk too.
You need the system DVD that came with computer, or use a different partition that has an OS on it..
If you hold down 'option' when you boot up, you'll get a list of drives to boot from.. I believe the later versions of OSX, put a 'recover disk' partition on, this I believe will let you repair main OSX drive.
There is also a program called 'Disk Warrior', that will often fix things the Apple disk utilty can't...

10.6.8 works fine. It must be something different with your Mac.
Run Console.app and look if you can find an error message.

Installer complains about a 'Missing bundle identifier' frequently, however for a different product. Your installed receipts database seems to be broken. Maybe you should try and install the most recent versions of these other products to fix the database? I am just guessing, though.
Another tip I found:

Also be sure to update to the lastest release of OS X 10.6.8.
