Synfire 1.7.7 fixes a lot of bugs and odd behaviors, including Engine crashes. The download is available on your user accounts now. Here's a complete list of changes: (http://www.cognitone.com/support/article.stml?o=119)
Feature Enhancements
Check out the Instrument menu. You will find two new items to assign an instrument of your arrangement to be used as bass and/or chords when surfing the palette, using the harmonizer or progression editor. Sounds related to your current work are often more sensible than a permanent global assignment. This setting however only affects "live" playback, provided it was started in the arrange window (multiple palette windows can be used from then on).
The keyboard widget on the Harmonizer, Palette and Progression Editor tabs now addresses the current chord instrument, whichever it is.
On the Palette editor, you'll find streamlined menus for Layout and the right-click menus on each chord and on each scale. A new 'More ...' item makes it easier to open the Catalog and explore or edit interval structures.
Bug Fixes
On OS X, the horribly silent Internal GM Synth was brought back to a normal volume. Now you can use it even without loading the equivalent DLSMusicDevice AudioUnit into a rack, although for best timing, you should still do so when multiple plug-ins are being used.
The Parameter Inspector (the tabbed thing at the lower right end of the arrange window) often showed the wrong parameter, or even worst, showed conflicting items from multiple parameters. This was worst on the Matrix view. This has now finally been fixed.
The inspector now also switches to Figure automatically, when you first select a Figure, or to Harmony when you first select a chord in the progression. This ensures it reflects what you currently see on the instrument sheet or Matrix editor.
Thanks to everyone submitting their crash reports, a lot of annoyances, big and small, could be fixed.

Just put a new build online that fixes the following issues:
- Engine 1.11.4 fixes crashes on shutdown (could no longer reproduce it, hope its gone now)
- Less confusing warning when Engine versions don't match
- Retain preferences and settings across MIDI file imports
- Jump to export settings from File menu (Pro only)
- Restored the old "General MIDI" option on export file dialog (mainly to be able to disable it last-minute)
