Snippets Grid Exclusive Mode

Posted

Hi.

I'd like to suggest an alternate mode of operation for the Snippets Matrix (SM), which I will call exclusive mode (EM).

In EM, the entire SM would behave as-if all the snippets were in a single column.

IOW, after selecting a new snippet the instruments/figures in it would "take over" from the currently playing snippet in every case.  (How to most flexibly deal with Harmony may require separate thought/discussion.)

The primary situation calling for this is when each snippet, in effect, contains a performance by the "whole band" rather than just a single instrument.

Here's the postulated workflow:

1.  Using a normal SM of single-instrument snippets, audition and save snippet memories into a library.  In this way, fill a library with "complex snippets" (CSs, aka "whole band" snippets).

2.  Drag desired CSs back into the SM.

3.  Perform in the SM and capture/record into an Arrangement.

Of course it is nicely direct to build the bones of an arrangement from a SM performance, and if you only have a small number of sections (CSs) which can all be put in a single column then we are good-to-go right now.

The stumbling block arises when you are trying to do this with a large number of sections (CSs).  In this case, the real-estate of a single column does not accommodate the needed access, and using multiple columns gives you different behavior (e.g. simultaneous playback, or the need to do more complex ordered clicking to prevent it) than what is desired for this workflow.

If we could flip a switch and have the entire SM behave as-if all the snippets were in a single column this workflow would be greatly enabled.
