How to make easy expressions automations for tracks

Posted

Enclosed a professional made midi .. of a expression (volume) automation for a GM violin
Is this easy to do in Synfire  express ? .. if i look at the curves how they follow the notes
I can do it with a wheel/pencil or slider, but the example seems to be done with a wheel?

I don't know if the Yamaha who has made this midi has a more advanced program to do this expression automation.
How to get the same curves like in the example , because the vector(line) of the expression parameter is written after parameter recording when i use a wheel.
Is it a question of "feeling of the wheel"  to get the same curves of the enclosed pic, when i try this in Synfire ?
What workflow is needed for this ?

Of course you can import, record or draw controller automation curves with Synfire. I usually draw curves in my compositions.

You might even consider using external software like this free program: NTONYX Stylizer.

No idea if this suits your workflow, though.

Thanks HiEnergy !

Yes, drawing  controller automation curves with Synfire  would be the easiest way.
But how to get the right curve?..Synfire seems not to be suitable to do this...
I worked with a program where it was possible to work with dragging a tangent line (the first derivative of the curve) from the curve to  modelling a curve between two points.
In the case of the example you choose a startpoint and endpoint for a note(s) duration and sketch the curve.

The enclosed example is probably made by someone with much experience with a wheel ( i don't have that experience and feel yet ( i will get it never ? ... :-) )

Maybe NTONYX Stylizer can help..i will look at it, but my impression that it is for a particulair style of music ..in my case it is one violin expression.

I loaded the examples from stylizer (From good Mood (initial ) and (result) in Synfire.. yes, a impressive difference with the result midi(no stylizer changes) ..this sounds more natural than the initial midi for sure, but nothing to see from this as parameter chance in Synfire...only than the Interpetation parameter

Note : found the imported midi good mood (resultl) as static midi imported really good, better than the imported version from Synfire when it is interpretated by the musical AI.
How to get this midi quality back in Synfire ?..by adding automations, but than i must be easy and secure done

I tested  the access methods for writing automating curves in synfire to try get the same controller curve as in the violin example pic and even with the Gestalt tool i did not get the same vectorcurve .. so perhaps i am not handy enough?

I make myself worry about the qualityloss of the imported Midi..
In static mode imported, it is a lively accordian song with the HALion5GM and after import liveless..so how to get the live feeling back in Synfire with HALION5 ?
- The Gm acoustic guitar sounds a little bit strange with the NTONYX--replacing by a native HALIon5 guitar?

- The lively accordian is gone.. has it to do with some note positions?-what is changed by Synfire..
The soul of the midi is gone.. :toobad:..how to get it back

The quantisize option is ok, but with note change in mean... in vertical direction, that 's probably why the accordion lost his livelyness.. it are not the same tones anymore vertical .. i think
Halion5 General Midi sounds awesome with this static imported accordion midi , but imported in synfire not static it looses the liveness of the accordion

Solution!!

I made from the static accordion track (imported static midi) a "h track" ( converted the static symbols into in h symbols ) and copied these symbols into the imported accordion track ( replace them)--->SOUNDS MUCH BETTER NOW..the real feeling of the accordion has returned.. maybe even better :yeah:
I am pleased with this result..lets waltz
Using a mixed mode GM device description : GMsounds + HAlion5 native sounds for guitars (No GM)

Note: the Bounce function is not working ? ..can not show on soundcloud

Janando

Can you please make a short gif of the process you followed to get the accordion sound back to the way you wanted it.

I have experience the same problem you are describing here.

Thanks Jan!

Hi Eduardo

It is not difficult to do..

You must open 2 Synfire programs

-one with the static midi file --> chance here static track to blue h

-one with the imported midi file --> copy the new blue h from static midifile into imported midi file

Note : the video seems to be not working ?, but you get the idea now

Perhaps there must come in Synfire a extra feature :
that if you are not satified with a imported track you can replace this track with the original static track than converted to a imported track format.
In the case of the Accordion midi..absolutely neccessary..it is the differnce between a lifeless, dull , boring accordion or vividly, expressive accordion what makes you happy
