Linnstrument /poly pressure midi support and groove

Posted

Hello,

i hope you're all doing well. I'm finally up and running with the synfire pro , now it is practice time ! Thanks to many updates which make it so much simple to approach, really appreciated !

i m planning to get the linnstrument soon, expressive controller and was wondering if synfire is able to support poly midi messages ?

see here: (http://www.rogerlinndesign.com/linnstrument-recommended-sound-generator…)

any user around here ?

I have a subsidiary question not rellated to linnstrument especially, I'm very sensitive to how sequencer are "grooving" (their capability to keep their "cadence" right) something I haven't yet identified on synfire (except the quantification of course) is how good synfire manage the groove aspect (I need to compare it with other sequencers as my MPC 60 grand mother, linn /forat 9000).

Are there optimisations or more customizations in this area planned for synfire ? I don't know why but on rythmic elements I feel a real difference when entering the same pattern in a daw than on some good hardware sequencers, the feel is different and better to me on hardware sequencers.

thank you very much for your support ,

HIya, cant comment on the poly pressure as all my vsts and hardware synths are channel pressure sensitive.

As to grooves, synfire is packed with grooviness ;)

Seriously you have the rythem, step and shift parameters all of which alter the timing of notes in different ways. You can import a midi groove and use them and I think there are some example grooves in the example libraries.

There are some videos around on the wiki pages that explain the differences between the three options.

Oh and check out the whats new video as that shows dragging the rythem off one instrument (automatically extracts the groove) and dropping it on a different track to get the two to sync together.

I have to admit though that it is not easy to edit/create a groove from scratch unless you use the standard 1/8, 1/4, 1/16 grid to place the rythem steps then nudge them around with the grid off. Far easier to import a midi sequence that has the groove you are after and extract the groove from that. Add it to a library and you only need to do it once.

Also think there are some mpc groove files in the files section on this forum

Thank you so much blacksun for sharing your opinion and some hints. Groove is also important not only for rythm parts as you know but bass lines and any instrument in fact depending on the composition of course. So I need to experiment now -:) lininstrument should be there in a month so I will how they work together -:)

talk soon

enjoy your Saturday

By the way Andre (if you around) you should think one day of a dedicated customized  controller (which will replace even the ilok) crazy idea maybe -:)
