Step parameter only works in original container

Posted

I would expect that the Step parameter works just as the other parameters in the following way:

A container containing just the data for the parameter is placed below other container to override their parameter.

This works for several parameters (volumes, velocities,..) but not for Step!

You always need to change the parameter in the same container that contains the figure that is to be rendered differently.

The Step parameter is such a powerful feature, it is my favorite tool to generate variations of melodies, and it would be great if you could use this over container aliases too!

Hi Tom

If you create your empty container and then while it's highlighted, right-click on the Step parameter and click Edit. Is that what you're trying to do or have I misunderstood?

Yes Pete, that's it. And above the empty container there's an alias container whose figure should be affected by the step parameter

Could you post a picture of your container structure please? I've been trying to reproduce your problem but I can't seem to manage it!

I think I encountered the same or a similar problem some months ago and attributed it to either a bug in Synfire or a misconception on my side.

I circumvented the problem by snapshotting the Figure into the container that's supposed to manipulate the Step. You just have to remember to renew the snapshot everytime the inherited content changes.

@Pete: Here is a screenshot: It shows that the step parameter is only applied to a figure that is in the same container (@cognitone: bug or feature?)

Thanks for the picture Tom. I thought I had nailed container inheritance a long time ago, but this has confused the hell out of me! If nobody else can offer an explanation, we'll have to wait for Andre to resurface, as he's obviously very busy at the moment.
