Stuck Up Ports

Posted

Forgive my subject humor.... I am braving into the territory of using two pieces of MIDI hardware with SFP.  I'm using a Yamaha Tyros 4 and a Motif XS rack.

It was my understanding that in the Audio & MIDI setup I could connect the Tyros 4 to port 1 and the Motif rack up to Port 2.  And I could assign up to 4 ports each with 16 midi channels available (more than I'll ever need.)

I can only get the SFP outport slot 1 to work.  And when I first pull up the Audio & MIDI setup - all output ports are disconnected (greyed out). If I highlight Tyros 4 under 'Loaded Description'  Output port displays properly (Tyros). There I see the Tyros MIDI ports 1 and 2; I see Motif ports 1 - 4 and all 16 IAC busses.. Once I've selected SFP output port it always displays properly, although only Output port Slot 1 seems assigned. Ports 2 - 4 remain greyed out and 'disconnected'.

If I highlight Motif Description - SFP output port correctly sees Motif port 1.

Is this the way it's supposed to work. Or should I see whatever "loaded desciptions" selected and their appropriate SFP Outputports.  I do get both MIDI devices to operate when I select the port under the "Instrument" tab, on arrange page.

SFP does not play nicely with the Motif Voice editor.  But I suspect that the fault lies more with Yamaha, it acts up with Logic too, but in general plays nicer.  The Yamaha voice editor is a neccessity (for me anyways). Cause there are way too many parameters on Motif rack Face panel to deal with.

I downloaded the Motif device list from Cognitone.  Thanx for that..

The connectors B, C and D get enabled (selectable) only if there are sounds for these found in the device description. That is, no connector B will be available unless you have assigned it to at least one of the sounds.

This is a weakness of the old device setup. The new one will be much easier to handle, especially for devices with multiple ports. The new system will support dynamic or fixed patch selection across multiple ports.
