Where do I add vst from so the levels on mixer work(volume) it seems a bit hit or miss with sounds I add sometime the faders work sometimes they dont.

Yes, synfire uses MIDI to control the vst's volume, so some wont respond, try messing around with the volume on the controllers page accessed from the intrument pane (right side inspector), if that fails, will set it up as automation, I run the test volume button and that modulates the desired controller(volume) and have your plugin's learn function pick it up.

Faders send MIDI CC, not plugin automation parameters. This is to ensure portability with all (multi timbral) plugins and external hardware synths. Use the learn MIDI feature of your plugin to map CC 7 to master volume, for example, or any other controllers.
