Extending the start of a container

Posted

Is it possible extend the left boundary of a container?

If not, what is the workflow?

I tend to work backwards, starting at key points of music and then adding the music before it. I've been copying and pasting but I'm sure thats not the best way with multiple vectors filled in.

Indeed an interesting point. I also find myself in the situation very often where I want to work this way. There are different ways to achieve this:

(1) Basically a container is a bundle of phrases, each of which is a bundle of vectors. The default way to have it start at a later time, is to move the container. As of 1.0.2, there is the new possibility to use the "Container >> Make Room" menu item: Select the desired parent container (usually the root), then mark a span on the time ruler and finally call up this action. This will move all children of the selected container to the right by the selected span.

(2) Put your container inside a new container, move it to the right and add new content to the parent as desired. You could also make a snapshot, which creates physical copies of all phrases, later on.

(3) Simply insert blank space into the vectors at the beginning.

As we are at it, I could think of adding a feature that works like "Make Room" but for a single phrase only. This would insert space into all physically present vectors of the phrase, saving the manual work.

Hm. Unfortunately "Make Room" would not work for phrases, because not all vectors support empty space at their beginning: Harmony, Tempo, Rhythm, .. and many more.

It is the creative decision of the composer which vectors he/she wants to move to the right. Simply automating that for all vectors would incur hefty side effects.

Actually only Take, Figure and MIDI controllers would make sense here.
