I have watched the video and read about this process in the manual. And have also imported a Haydn midi file and created a library file of phrases. Also spent several hours trying every possible combination of parameters to create correct figures. I tried selecting the right hand then the left hand, using auto detect, etc. Could you please tell me the best way to create figures from the attached files? This is a key task I must learn since this is how I wish to create with Synfire. Thanks!
UPDATE - Got a little closer to what I think will work. By hilighting the bottom things and IDing them as Chords and hilighting the ascending things and IDing as Verticals. See attached.

When converting Figures from MIDI, you need to keep in mind that what you see on a "piano roll" actually is a very simple figure mapped to moving harmony. The example picture you attached shows 2x the same figure. Converting the first half of it would suffice, as the second half is just a different rendition of the same figure.
Rule of thumb: Keep figures simple and let Synfire do the magic of repetition + harmony change.
Simple figures also lend themselves better to combination and re-use.
The worst thing you could do is import a long track of music and keep it as-is.
BTW: The second picture already looks fine. Try trimming it to the first half and see how it performs.
