Continuation overflow at "X"..

Posted

When importing files, some seem to run into a stumbling block(?) which takes longer than normal where "continuation overflow at x" is logged quite a few times.. What exactly does that log message mean, and is there something that can be done with the MIDI data in a sequencer ahead of time to avoid running into it?

This message means the backtracking algorithm's depth limit is reached. This might happen when the musical midi patterns offer too many possibilities for segment resolution.

It's best to avoid very long passages of repetition with fast rhythm, especially when a phrase actually only consists of always the same chords or parallel voices.

The standard solution for this is to postpone figure recognition until after the import: Unckeck the "Create Figures" box in the import dialog. You can select and recognize each track later. This gives you the opportunity to cut redundant material from the take before you run the recognition.
