Playing ranges

Posted

Hi all,
1.) is there a way to reset the "playing ranges" of instruments in the "Audio & MIDI  Setup" window back to their factory defaults?

2.) While creating device decriptions, how to know what to specify as "playing ranges" for new instruments (for lower, middle, upper)? Where to  get this information from?
I guess the total "playing range" of acoustic instruments one can google as there are many articles about this subject eg:

http://obiaudio.com/2010/07/11/eq-chart/

http://www.orchestralibrary.com/reftables/rang.html

http://solomonsmusic.net/insrange.htm

http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory29.htm

But even then, what is the criteria for splitting these playing ranges in  "lower", "middle", "upper" as required by the  "Audio & MIDI  Setup" window?

And what to specify as "playing ranges" for VST presets (like eg those from Halion, Kontakt etc) ?

Welcome to the forum, Erdöl,

you can reset the ranges by deleting them from a sound (right-click menu, ranges->cut). This does reset them to the default of its category.

If they were specific to a particular synth or sample library, you will need to find a backup copy of the device file and restore that. Devices do not have undo buffers saved with them.

Most electronic sounds do not have range limits, but you will probably only want to play them in a certain range. This is your personal decision.

Sample libraries of natural instruments have limits. The lower bound of the "Lower" range and upper bound of the "Upper" range need to reflect this (total maximum range). The other ranges in between are again your personal decision and depend on where you see the "sweet spot" of a sound when used in an upper, middle or lower register.
