Problem Updating Synfire

Posted

My problem isn't limited to just Synfire, but it is preventing me from completing the update to 2.1.

About 2 weeks ago I decided to update all of my Native Instruments apps (Kontakt etc), using their Native Access portal. This turned out to be unfortunate timing, because Windows 11 security detected something in one of the NI downloads to be a virus. I spent pretty much an entire day dealing with this, but the consensus on the Steinberg Cubase forum (many people were having this same problem) was that it was a false alarm, and at this point I'm certain it was.

However, at some point in the process of damage control, a W11 security setting (Controlled Folder Access, or CFA) became much stricter. It used to assume apps were benign and could be allowed through, but now it assumes they are harmful unless I add them to the list of apps that I wish to designate as benign. So I've added Synfire, Cubase, etc to the list and they do work, although it seems their buffers need to be larger in order to run properly.

But the particular problem I'm seeing in the course of trying to update Synfire is that the CFA function is not allowing the update to complete. See the 2 jpgs below.

The file ending in 33 shows that Windows Security is blocking setup.exe from making changes. However, I have added the setup file to the list of apps allowed through, and I can see it on the list, so I don't understand why this is happening.

The file ending in 22 is a message from Synfire, telling me the update process has failed.

Is there some way to get CFA to release its vice grip on my various apps so they can run and update properly?

Thank you.

You probably need to also add SETUP.exe and (if I remember correctly) Synfire Pro Setup.exe (found in C:\ProgramData\Cognitone\Setup\Synfire).

The latter is created only after running SETUP.exe though.

I called Sweetwater tech support (I bought my computer from them), and they pointed out that the CFA function has an on/off button.

So I turned CFA off, did, the update, and then turned it back on. Easy.

But I'll add that Synfire Pro Setup.exe file to the CFA list just in case.

Thank you.

It turns out there is no Synfire Pro Setup.exe file in the folder to which you referred. There's just a setup.exe file, and I've previously added that to the list.

Anyway, Synfire appears to be working properly.

Thanks again.
