Reharmonizing

Posted

Say I'm re-harmonizing a song, using just three instruments, a piano part which has a melodic and rhymic quality, a single note melodic flute and a melodic bass.

There will be a different effect of three one bars sections of C verses one three bar section of C?

Earlier I had re-harmonized inserting a fair amount of modulating or passing chords.  If I delete most of them will the result be a 'more stable' piece?

I think when I entered too many (kinda exotic chords - at the bottom of chord suggestion list), it was hard to feel the center of the piece, cause you couldn't tell or feel what the "KEY" of the song was.

I think the song sounds better with some periods of 2-3 bars of same chord (at least for this piece).  Because I have 13 tracks going, it's a bit hard to distinctly discern what is happening in each instrument, unless I solo it.  (I'm also making too much work for myself).  Less chords seem to result in a simpler more elementry sound (which I'm looking for in this piece).  To many chords seems to lead to more exaggerated movement in instruments (in this case, too complex) less catchy.

Can you elaborate on this a bit please?

Thanx

Good point. Yes. Synfire treats the transitions between chords as hints for voice leading, even if it's the same chord over and over. That is, near a transition, it prepares melodies for moving on to a new chord.

Multiple copies of the same chord do indeed "stabilize" the final result. This re-emphasizes the chord multiple times, making it stand out more obviously.
