Firstly I might me missing something obvious so if I am please enlighten me!
Many daws support automation lanes that you can edit by drawing on the midi clip somehow. These then drive certain controls in the soft synth (or hard synth). In conjunction with this there is often a midi learn option or midi mapping option that lets you select a control in the synth and map it to a hardware control and or automation lane.
Can an option be added that let's you 'wiggle' the controls in synfire or its drones so that the control in synfire can be mapped both to a control in the soft synth and also to the automation control in the daw?
As an example....
Load up massive in a drone. Select midi learn for the filter cutoff in massive.. Open up the option in the drone with midi controls listed, 'wiggle' the mod wheel control in the drone popup. Now I can add filter cutoff controls to my figures by drawing mod wheel movement in synfire.
At the moment I can't find a way to link the parameter in synfire with the soft synth control I want to modulate. I'm having to transfer the midi to my daw (ableton) then add the soft synth vst directly to the midi track replacing the drone. The automation is in the midi file exported from synfire's drone.
If the option in the drone is also set to expose these controls to the daw and provide a way of selecting them in the daw then I can also modulate the parameters in the soft synth by drawing or editing automation in the daw in case I don't want to go back to synfire to edit them.
Hope that makes some sort of sense?

Use custom CC definitions in Synfire. Add them to your device description.
They are standard MIDI CC and your vst should recognize the input when you move the sliders in Synfire.

Thanks supertonic, will give that a go. I'd got everything working in synfire but couldn't think of what to move when clicking on a control in the drone hosted vst. I'd already seen the cc data in the midi output from the drone just I hadn't worked out how to map it to stuff in the vst except the normal mod wheel, pitch bend, etc that had specific entries in the synth parameters.

I am very interested in this, too.
Are you saying that you can record automation in SFP so that, for example a CC like CC1, modulation, can continuously be varied across an instrument's phrase in a container and that variation is then saved to repeat the next tie that section is played if it is not over written; or, only that you can 'set and forget' custom CCs like the volume or pan in a HN2 section?
The ability to write and read CC automation in a container would be a fantastic feature.

In Synfire every CC parameter is a linear vector, so yes, you can draw automation curves that are part of a phrase.
