Hmmm I am a bit confused - i have a plugin loaded as an Arrangement Rack and defined the playing ranges low mid and high - but when i use it Synfire chooses notes below the lowest playing range i defined - i thought this should be impossible!

It's not impossible, that notes outside the playing range are played. It depends on your setting at the option "Range" at the Interpretation parameter. There are 4 options:
Open: The playing range is ignored. Notes outside the playing range are played.
Clip: Notes outside the playing range are cut off.
Fold: Parts of the segment that contains notes outside the playing range are clipped of and will be transposed to fit the playing range
Shift: The whole segment is transposed to fit the playing range.

Yes, and my interpretation option "range" is set to Fold - so i am wondering cos I saved the plugin as a global rack, saved the arrangement as a midi and reimported it for that rack - than it works! I don't get a way how to do it without this work around.
