After many weeks of hard work, Synfire 1.7.12 is ready for testing now (Note: This is a new build of 1.7.11 that, for technical reasons, required a new version number). The list of enhancements and fixes is long and yes, this is a big update. It makes Synfire more productive and fun.
The complete list of changes is, as always, is found here: (http://www.cognitone.com/support/article.stml?o=119)
I will post an official announcement and an intro video over the weekend, showing how to use the new Drag & Drop features and the enhanced embedded library. In brief, this is what you can do:
- Drag parameters to the lib (works also for partial Harmony selections)
- Drag tracks (instruments) to the lib
- Drag parameters off the 'Parameters' tab of the lib to anywhere in the arrangement, also non-existent ones that will be derived from the phrase, e.g. Rhythm
- Drop anything to a vector while holding CTRL (Mac: CMD) = Insert
- Drop anything to a vector while holding SHIFT = Merge
- Drop anything to a phrase also in Hyper Edit mode
- Drop anything on an instrument name (also minimized ones)
- Browse phrases in a pool with thumbnails of the phrase or parameter
- Audible preview of parameters in a pool (e.g. Harmony)
- Drag instruments, parameters to a container (move or copy)
- Load, create, rename libraries from popup menu, structured after your filesystem directories
- Edit MIDI CC parameters in linear mode by default (data points now movable)
- Enjoy new example libraries with much improved quality and new content (you can delete the old one)
Some of this, more or less, already worked before, but has been overhauled and streamlined for better quality.
IMPORTANT NOTE: After you install, please check in preferences under 'Files', if your example documents directory is set to '/Users/YourName/Documents/Synfire Pro/Examples'. If not, please do so, or the new libraries will not show up in the menu.

can i now drag phrases from one instrument to another
With the mouse, this rearranges the track order. The way to copy an entire phrase is to select the instrument and cut or copy, the select the target instrument and paste.
Copy & paste copies all current parameters. Drag & drop from a library does not touch Volume, Pan, Transpose and a few other parameters that are usually used to control the arrangement as a whole.

I am also puzzled about the Duplicate function
I am trying to generate a linear sequence of duplicates on an instrument.
I lasso the phrase I wish to duplicate and insteasd of getting what I would expect, which is a copy of the dphrase I wished to duplicate right next to the selected phrase, I get an overlapping duplicated phrase.
In Studio One when I select a phrase and press D for dupicate I get the expected duplication of the phrase in alinear time sequence.
How do I do this?
I am sure it is easy! Everything in Synfire is once you figure out how!
A series of videos on all of the new features in this update would be deeply appreciated!
Thanks Andre! This is a very powerful and exciting update!
:yeah:

This is a fantastic update!
There appears to be many new features which I am noticing just by playing around.
Is there someway to copy a figure form one instrument into the precise same position on another instrument?
I am sure there is but not figuring it out.
Another question, I wanted to harmonize a phrase between two instruments. Can I drop and drag the transpose parameter onto just the phrase I want to transpose? So far, when I have tried this I wind up transposing the whole instrument.
Cannot wait for Andre's tutorial video (s) {hint} on the new update! Magnificent!

Okay!
Silly me!
I figured out that I just needed to drag the overlaid duplicate to where I wanted in the timeline.
New question.
Probably also a simple answer
I wanted to create a linear sequence of short duplicate phrases, and then use the variation parameter to vary each duplicte.
Cannot figure out how to do this!
When I copy a phrase figure to the variation parameter I wind up varying the entire set of phrases, rather than just the one I had selected to alter.
Help?

You can reposition the overlapping duplicated phrase to another position by de left en right and up en down controls

Thank you!
Any wisdom on either of my issues?
Just transposing a single phrase rather than the entire instument?
And or how to create variations within my duplicated phrases with the variation parameter without effecting the entire instrument (track)?

As i can see it now with the variation parameter .. the idea is a variation s of a phrase ? draw a test phrase of 3 bars and choose : display selected parameters ( left button of the right button tools block of 4 : hypereditor is in there too as help/orientation.
Select the phrase symbols and choose template for the variation parameter ... depends on how long the rootcontainer is..it is repeating the phrase with different variations .

Transpose a phrase by a putting a box around it and then with the up /down keys move the box :)..but that is too simple ?
There is also a transpose slider for the transpoze parameter..again with a selection box ? ..yes possible also selection with span tool .. 12 (half)steps is a octave here for this used scale.
Note: the symbols are not moving !.. when you transpose.

If you limited yourself say to one phrase of 1 bar and let this phrase repeating itself ..add then variaton with a generator or template to the repeated phrases.
And or how to create variations within my duplicated phrases with the variation parameter without effecting the entire instrument (track)?
It is possible to add a variation vector(line) under a phrase and chance this vectorline with a line drawing tool..when you draw this on the x-axis ..variation is 0 ..what transformation ? .. or draw your own variation curve ?
There are 25 transformations altogether (Invert, Transpose, Stretch, Compress,
Smooth, Bend, and more), each of which is represented by a foating-point number
between 0 and 1. This allows you to vary the existing motif very efectively with the
desired intensity. It is not (yet) possible to exert more exact control over this
process.

Hi Richard
Just transposing a single phrase rather than the entire instument?
And or how to create variations within my duplicated phrases with the variation parameter without effecting the entire instrument (track)?
The parameters are at container level so you could make a small container containing just your single phrase, then duplicate the container as many times as you like. After that you can apply the transpose and/or variation parameters to each container individually.
I hope I've understood correctly what you're trying to achieve?
Di., 10.03.2015 - 20:36 Permalink
You can place a container with only a Variation parameter in it anywhere where you want it to take effect.
Sorry for the long wait for the video, btw. I got distracted by another urgent task and will get back to video making soon.

New build #2 is online now and ready for download.
Since only a few minor bugs were reported, it is no longer a beta.

Hi Andre, thank you for continually updating Synfire and making it a better tool for music creation. Will there be a user manual update as well? As convenient it is for some to watch and learn from videos, I like to read:). Am I the only person who likes to read?
Thanks again for all that you do.
