The manual says:
Note: Variation changes the figure even before it's rendered. You can hear, but not see, this change. If you would like to keep the changed figure, you must put an empty container next to it and make a physical copy of it by using Container >> Make Snapshot.
If I do that, the new container still contains the original figure along with the Variation parameter. What am I doing wrong please?

Can't say what the manual exactly means here, but if you want a physical copy of the modified figure you can select the Variation parameter and then use the command Parameter >> Save to Figure (or right click at the Variation LED and then choose Save to Figure).
After you have executed this command you will need to delete the Variation parameter. Otherwise the variation would be applied at the modified figure again.
