What kind of instruments work best for you during composition ?

Posted

I tried to start composition with serveral vst synths at first but was always confused or satisfied to quickly. Nowadays I use the midi piano on all figures as I can clearly see when there is some sort of error or dissonance in the arrangement. Later these are replaced by synths. I have to delete some of the midi tracks often as its getting to much with more than 2 synths at the same time.

I am going to solve this with call and response so two instruments are not playing at the same time and everything is not too crowded.

what are your go-to instruments for composition?

its a very much aphex twin influenced style which is can be done by playing rock and metal arrangements like Rammstein with synthesizers but also includes classical and microtonal stuff (Boards of Canada) mostly played in medieval modes and jazz arrangements similair to Bitches Brew by Miles Davis.

examples of where I want to go:

Great music. You can definitely do that with Synfire. Provided you find the right synths to render the natural instruments.

Good approach. Helpy you avoid getting lost in sound tweaking too early.

Try the Pause parameter for this! Just mute/unmute different instruments in more or less rapid succession. Pause does a very organic mute, in that it doesn't cut figure segments into pieces.

AAS do make great acoustic simulations (physical modelling):

Did you think this was a synth?

AAS Professional Series are all wonderful instruments with rich expressiveness: Chromaphone, String Studio, Lounge Lizard EP-4. They are on a 50% holiday sale now. Be awayre thought, that physical modelling eats a lot CPU.
