Theorically speaking, Synfire should be an ideal companion when writing a contrapuntal texture. So I thrown a 1-bar Figure, then I attempted to build some imitations over and under it. Of course it's hard if not impossible, but also not necessarily desirable, to write a fugue in SF respecting the academic rules, but the software did a decent work.
Before to start inserting the Figures, I set the individual ranges of the "voices" approximatively similar to the ranges of a soprano, a contralto and a bass.

Nice Example. Wouldn't it be great to have the option to apply some voice-leading rules to figures?
Often i find the voice leading strange and unmusical. Sometimes within the same Instrument, but more often across multiple instruments (eg. long held & clashing halfsteps, tritones etc).

Good question...
Synfire will output a fairly consistent voice leading if you
- set the Intrerpretation param to Weak
- choose Open in the Range menu on the right
- choose the right horizontal scale and pick your chords from the palette rather than typing them via computer keyboard
At least, this is what I learned in lots of exeperiments. Try also with switching your Figures from Horizontal (bluette) to Vertical (Light Green) or vice versa, and drag them up/down on the instrument "track" until you get a good result...

What is the advantage here?
Less typing, more listening. If you already know all chords by name though, you can as well type them in and let Synfire select the best scales with Estimate Keys and Scales in one go.
BTW, I love the fugato experiment. Nice rhythm. IMO, rhythm is 50% of the music. We are working on tools to make it easier to come up with consistent rhythm.

I own everything to the Palettes.
AFAIK there is nothing as complete and versatile like HN2 or Synfire palettes; neither in Scaler 1.6, a pretty respectable software but lacking the powerful flexibility of Synfire (without mentioning that one could open an unlimited number of palettes and play with a full range of musical moods simultaneously under his/her fingers).
