Condense Chords???

Posted

My results with importing MIDI files into Synfire 2 has been hit and miss. Every once in awhile the import will be unusable. But for the most part, the results sound okay, even if the Figures look a little awkward. Of course, I'm attempting to get the most consistent results with Figures so that I can apply them to a variety of arrangements. I just watched an old tutorial on YouTube for Synfire 1 in which an imported phrase was split according to symbols and then merged once ech segment had been edited iindividually. Before the splitting the figure, Andre chose an option in the Transform menu called "Abstract Segments" which looked to render the imported chords into a more managable arangement. This procedures is also recommended in the "Optimizing Figures" tutorial on the website. When I look in the Transform menu of Synfire 2, however, I no longer see this option available. It looks like "Condense Chords" may have taken its place? But when I select "Condense Chords" nothing seems to happen. At least I don't notice the chords aligning the way they do in the YouTube tutorial. There isn't a description of this feature in the Synfire 2 manual, just a series of question marks. (Seriuolsy, the entry reads Condense Chords: ???).

Is this feature still in development? Is it designed to replace "Abstract Segments"? What is its purpose?

Split By Symbol Type and Merge Phrases are in the Phrase menu.

It's embarassing but I currently have no recollection of Condense Chords. It's probably one of those development experiments that slipped into the release by accident. It is definitely not an official feature ;-)

Figure recognition has a flaw that sometimes creates too many bass symbols where they shouldn't be. I remember it could be fixed by lowering the playing ranges of the instrument of the track somehow (Auto-Transpose?). We will look into this. There should at least be a task description in the manual how to workaround this.

Oh, and there's a new feature Focus on Symbols For Bass (or whatever type). Click and hold the mouse on the symbol type on the toolbar. Great for editing symbols types individually.

But what happened to the "Abstraction" setting in the old figure recognition menu? Obviously it's missing now.

Ah, okay. Appreciate the explanation, Andre. Like juergen, I'm curious if the Abtract Segment feature will return. Has it been removed? Or will it be a part of Synfire 2 on the full release date? It seems like it would be very handy.

Can't look into the code at the moment. If I remember correctly, abstraction is now the default mode. If some vertical cluster is deemded a chord, it will translate to a somewhat simplified chord segment with estimated properties. Since chord segments heavily depend on Interpretation and progression settings, anything that is not abstracting would not make much sense.

Have here a piano sound ( abstract piece ) based on 4 chords: Cm-F9-Eb-Cm
Via the output screen I was able to bring the first 2 chords to the right pitch by shifting chord tones.
The third + fourth chords in the sound clip did not work anymore....
Question 1:
Can the output screen be adjusted with a vertical zoom function and octave position coloring ?

Are all diatonic chords what VST Halion uses
I should actually be able to place in the chord progression a "construction chord", which allows me to construct all Halion chords with also chord tone doubling.

Question 2: Is it possible to add an abstraction construction chord in the chord progression in order to make all the abstract chords?

Once this is done the import of the abstraction chords, then the chord progression can be converted to abstract chords and thus separate from the arrangement chords.

Example of use of chords in Halion
Maybe some day its posible to use those chords sounds from Halion in Synfire ..hopefully soon
A great potential for using all kind of sounds.
