Pre-Release Feedback: Sound Management

Posted

The sound management was largely rewritten and much improved with 2.0. We like to hear about your experience with the sound assignment wizard, racks, devices, drag & drop rack management and all.

This thread is meant for discussion, questions and suggestions. Please send bug reports directly to support at cognitone com, or better yet, submit crash reports via the Help >> Online Updates

How do you edit the rack owned by the library e.g. to remove duplicates I've created and reassign sounds.

Sa., 23.04.2022 - 23:05 Permalink

There's a toolbar icon for that (top left)

Or in arrange window: View >> Library Sounds

Thanks for this.

Unfortunately the Library sound functionality needs some more work. I get crashes when trying to copy across instruments to the arrange view from the library. It might be because I'm using an existing Library and Synfire 2 might need me to create a library from scratch.

So., 24.04.2022 - 13:08 Permalink

I've set up the library sounds from scratch to avoid the above crashes, but in my use case they still don't copy over correctly to the arrangement following drag and drop, unless the arrangement already has the same instrument set up. The device copies over correctly but not the sound.

on further tests:

EDIT: (found problem) when correctly set up in the library sounds rack, need to also make sure the presets have been rebuilt, as the move to S2 has broken some of them.

finally,

  • when a lib item is set to use a global rack sound, it doesn't retain this when copied / dragged over to the arrangement view, and the global sound assignment needs to be redone from scratch.

Thanks for your feedback. Can you submit crash reports with Help >> Online Updates?

The upgrade should not break existing rack module presets. They have not changed much. I will check a few more edge cases with drag and drop from library.

How do I set up the MIDI Drones to stream MIDI to the VSTs in my DAW? I'm using Studio One. When I create a track in Studio One with one of the drones, only the Audio Drone function is recognized in Synfire. Are there any steps that I'm missing?

So., 24.04.2022 - 14:54 Permalink

Ah, okay. I had to create a track for the plug in I wanted to use and I was able to find the MIDI Drone under the Insert Effects in the mixer. Thanks, Andre!

Had an opportunity to get my head around the racks now.

Actually quite powerful as I can now 'shard' my global rack into multiple libraries all loaded at the same time which is good when using VEPro.

That means I only need to load the subset of sounds I want to use for a particular arrangement saving load times.

No need for me for the global rack anymore except for some basic GM preview sounds and the metronome.

Hi Ruchir

How had you setup vep in synfire v2. I have tried but is unable to load a ensamble server into synfire rack.

So., 24.04.2022 - 17:36 Permalink

I used the VIENNA ENSEMBLE PRO SETUP toturial and it work fine in synfire v.1. I had to delete everything to get V 2 up runing.

I can se the vep as a vst but it wil not load.It try to load for a long time, but eventuly it gives up and just load an emty rack.

So., 24.04.2022 - 17:50 Permalink

Are you using v6 or v7 of VEPro? Also be aware that Synfire can now load both the vst2 and vst3 versions, so make sure you are using the same version for both server and plug-in.

So., 24.04.2022 - 18:34 Permalink

Post a couple of screenshots.
also check that Synfire has permissions through your firewall to access the local network which is req for VEPro.

So., 24.04.2022 - 18:47 Permalink

Great improvement that it automatically creates a device now so you can just load a VST and play without losing your mind.

Not really. The rack modules of a library only last until the library is closed. And their sounds are not available to an arrangement "by reference". You need to copy them to the arrangement (the wizard asks you to to do this if you drop a phrase).

So basically yes, you don't need a huge global rack to listen to your libraries. But the sounds still need to be copied to the arrangement as needed.

Here is some screencast

The pictures suggest you get Kontakt VST loaded instead of VEP, is that correct?

That seems weird. Synfire should not confuse them. They are really different.

@Ruchir

I get crashes when trying to copy across instruments to the arrange view from the library.

Are you dropping a rack module? Or a phrase?

You can do both.

So., 24.04.2022 - 19:04 Permalink

I think it is a little bit depending on what mood synfire is in, somtime kontakt somtime no vst, but always to rack.

So., 24.04.2022 - 19:12 Permalink

Re-scan you plug-ins from scratch. Under no circumstances should Synfire confuse Kontakt with VEP.

But maybe we are missing something here. Do you have rack module presets? Check if these work when you drop them.

With a VEPro workflow, it's not quite like that. As it separates a lightweight event sending vsti from the 'server' vsti. I can load all the server vstis into libraries now. So yes, I'll need to copy over the event vsti to the arrangement. However, this is very lightweight. In fact it reminds me of an inheritance model, where arrangements can inherit different combinations of libraries, assuming which libraries are open can be saved with the arrangement?

So., 24.04.2022 - 19:29 Permalink

Ah, now I understand.

assuming which libraries are open can be saved with the arrangement

The arrangement is nice and re-opens the library that was visible in its browser at the time it was saved. But whatever other libraries were open will not be re-opened immediately.  Also, the number of libraries kept silently open in the background (no library app/window) is limited to 3 or so.

So., 24.04.2022 - 21:22 Permalink

Great that Lottekoe got things working!

Andre, in time it would be great if you could lift that limit to libraries in the background

Also, is it possible to open the library rack from within the library app?

thanks again.

BTW the customisable shortcuts are really handy!

A library is like an arrangement: You open it, its rack is opened as well. You close it, the rack goes offline.

What I mean is that the only way I can see to open the library rack is from within the arrange app menus View Library Rack. This menu is not visible within the library app?

Not sure if I'm asking the same question as Ruchir (maybe in the same ballpark?), but in this preview video at the 8:50 mark you were able to open one of the libraries and drag and drop one of the figures into the factory to copy the Rhythm parameter for a new phrase. When I try to open the Library App it doesn't open the same way as in this video. It opens a Phrase Editor and none of the Figures are present to drag and drop into the KIM factory. I'd like to be able to drag Figures into the Factory outlets just like in this video but it doesn't seem to work the same for me.

That was a to short a message. The scan work fin but i stil can't load VEP. I tried to open VEP in cubase and there is no problem. Maybe it is a win 11 problem.
