I would love to know if its possible to use Synfire Pro with Vienna ensemble pro 5 and Protools 10hd native?

was thinking about rewire Synfire pro up with Protools an use Vienna Ensemble Pro 5 as a synth host.

Or do you guys know any alternative programs like synfire I can use with protools?

We have RTAS Drones working for ProTools but their legal terms seem to disallow this. Andre needs to check this with Avid legal department.

ReWire will work also without Drones. ReWire syncs the PT transport with Synfire. You could send MIDI via MIDI loopback driver to PT as a temporary solution until the RTAS solution will eventually become available.

Other users use Vienna Ensemble Pro with Synfire. I have not yet tried this though.

It would be great to get rtas drones up and running :)

What I was thinking was using vst drones in Vienna Ensemble pro?

Assuming your goal is to record the audio, this can easily be done with virtual midi cables. I prefer to work this way, rather than with the drones, as I would rather pick my patches myself than let Synfire decide.

What do I mean? Well, if you had 'locked' a particular patch, say a 1st Violin, to a Synfire device, than you couldn't again use the same patch for that song from Synfire. On the other hand, if you simply are sending the midi to PT or other DAW, then inside the DAW you can use the same patch as many times as you like, each on a different midi channel.

Rewire is also very primative in Synfire. All it actually permits is starting the transport in your daw which is slaved to Synfire. For an example, it does not permit looping of a section. I haven't found it very useful or 'up to speed' with other Rewire implementations I've used.

Again, I don't really find it necessary. My work flow is to use my DAW as a giant synth rack while I am prototyping in Synfire. When I am satisfied, I then export the midi file and import it to my DAW for a further bit of fine tuning or MIDI VST manipulation before I am ready to print the tracks to audio for mixing. Since the DAW already has all the patches/ instruments in midi tracks without midi files, I simply move each midi file to the track on which it was originally played and I am ready to go. Again, in other words, all my patch assignment needs only be done once from the time I am prototyping in Synfire.

thanks Prado, I think this is the way to go - virtual midi cables -

Do you know about any information, written or video on, virtual midi cables?

Google loopMIDI by tobias eriksens or erikson ... some dang son of an erik or erick.

I'm on PC, so I don't know what is available for other platforms.

I'm not aware of any tutorial or video, but if you've used midi inside your DAW before ... which I assume you have, there is nothing to it. You just install the divice. When your DAW opens it will recognize the new midi ports. You select them from your midi track just like any other midi or input or output.

You'll need to make a template 'arrangement' in Synfire using a 'customized' device so that you can lock the midi output from Synfire to your DAW through the virtual cables. Once you have this setup you simply open it, start a new 'save as' arrangement and then populate the Synfire tracks with the instrument of choice.

I've set this up with also a template to receive it in my DAW, Cubase. There ae some potential issues with setting up midi channel filters in your DAW, but it is a one time setup and always works type of project.

Check my user name for my posts and you'll find some posts under threads about Synfire Device setup that chronicle my ideas about using this.

Support on the forum is very good from the developers when you ask a specific question about 'how do I?' They almost always reply withing a day if not less than hours. You can also submit a support ticket for thorough response.

Good luck.

I'm not making progress setting up VEP5 (Vienna Ensemble Pro 5) with Synfire.

Are are any detailed VEP5 setup instructions?

I was able to connect Synfire to VEP5 after loading Spitfire Mural Violins Core Palette vol 1 into a Kontakt instance within VEP5.

Could not figure out how set midi port and midi channel when connecting Synfire to VEP5.

If I had no articulations setup in Synfire I could play a segment within Synfire and could hear the audio being generated in VEP5.

Once I setup articulations in Synfire and played a segment I heard nothing coming from VEP5.

My challenges are:

(1) Properly connecting to VEP5 from Synfire including midi ports and midi channels

(2) Setting up articulations in Synfire that will trigger articulation changes in VEP5

(3) Assigning articulations to segments within Synfire so that when played those articualtions carry through to VEP and change articulations within Kontakt.

Spitfire Mural is a deep library. There are many patches across many midi channels (within a midi port) for each instrument (like Violin 1, Cello, etc.)

The objective is to keyswitch to get a different articulation within a midi channel, or to switch midi channels (jump to a different patch within Kontakt) to get to a different articulation on a different midi channel.

Anyone done this successfully? Any advice?

Many thanks.

Update:

Vienna Ensemble Pro 5 is now supported: http://users.cognitone.com/tutorial/vienna-ensemble-pro-setup

Articulations will support Vienna Instruments matrix key switches ETA next update.

ETA for Pro Tools HD support (AAX) is next update.

Using orchestral sound libraries with Synfire with Kontakt 5 and/or VEP5 (for example) works best with templates (need to register sounds only once):

Basic sound setup videos will be updated to latest 1.7.13 user interface.
