HSO and “Never Reset Chased Controllers” option (used in Cubase 7.5)

Posted

HSO is HAlion Symphonic Orchestra ..

Problem i noticed too in Synfire and HSO ..the modulation controller is connectedby default  to the expression of the  instrument.
When startup the arrangement with HSO instruments, the modulation wheel is set on 0
This video shows the problem  http://www.zunzunegui.com/en/music/videos/index.html

Can this be fixed in Synfire?

just add a modultation wheel controller value at the start of the song set to 127. You only need 1 setting

Also for a lot of controller values, you can specify a default settings. Just cant remember if that included the mod wheel setting or not.

think there is also a setting to control reseting all controllers back to default on playback, will have a look when near my computer.

I don't get the intented working..the idea is that i can give up a position to Synfire for the modulation wheel position( between 0 and 127 ) in HAlion Symphonic Orchestra Vsti for all instruments at the same time.
In Halion there is a modulation wheel too
Example : i like to start with for all HAlion Symhonic Orchestra (HSO.. abbreviated ) instrument  in the VSti with a mod wheel position of 64 ( half position)
On this way the all Vsti instruments are hearable at start for the rack.

Im not 100% sure, but as modulation is one of the standard controls, it will probably work even if there is no control defined in the device description, if so check you arent importing a midi file with modwheel or expression values( if you are importing from a file).

Anyway, you can edit your instruments individually or the device definition. In either there is a controllers button. click that, check to see if there is already a controller defined for modulation (cc 1). If not then select the first entry, give it a name, eg modwheel, drop down the bank select drop box and select 1 Modulation. Enter a default value of what ever you want and check the box to send the default value on play back.

You will have to do this for every instrument every time you create a new tune, unless you edit a device description and use that or configure halion to be a global instrument. This is one time transient drones are less useful.

Alternatively you could over write the automation in cubase...

There is also a global parameter (settings) to reset the CC values back to their defaults when you change sounds or start playback (defaults are what ever youve set not what andre wanted).

Lastly, most instruments use the mod wheel for something, normally in synths its used to alter the sound or vibrato, so a keyboard player can change the sound as they are playing, similarly to the pitch bend wheel. They both are set with defaults that dont alter the sound. It looks like from what you are saying, Halion uses it to control volume like other instruments use velocity. Garitan personal orchestra works like your halion and I cant get on with that either, im used to hitting keys harder to increase volume not twiddle a knob ;)

sorry forgot that you didnt get what i was saying about drawing in the mod wheel setting. If you look at the parameters on the right of the figures, you will find one for modulation. Just put a single value at the start of the first figure in the root container for each instrument and that should set the mod wheel position. You wont have to alter the device definition then. You could also draw in all your swells and fades in the modulation parmeter in synfire. Or if you have an external keyboard with a mod wheel, record the settings in live using overdub.

hope some of that helps you out...

Yes that's the idea

A global defintion for the expression parameter..all sounds start on a self choosen value for the mod wheel in Halion for the HSO soundbank.
The mod wheel is now always starting on  value 0 when i open a arrangement in the default HSO configuration (expression controller set on mod wheel)
A solution for this that all sounds are not hearable at start of the arrangement, i have chanced the controller : 1 mod wheel into 11-expression for the Instruments in HSO..to get at least a global volume for all instruments in HSO.

For applying expression i must  chance the expression controller assigment from expression into Mod wheel again in HSO. ( the mod wheel is starting at 0 position ).
This is a very good solution for this mod wheel problem.

I don't know if the expression automation made in synfire can be exported to Cubase when using transient drones ?

It should do as its just midi data and works with ableton live. in live it appears as an envelope on the clip rather than an automation lane but it does work

I like to do automations in Synfire too, before it is exported to Cubase if necessary.
But if you look at classical arangenment by others made in Cubase .. it shows very clearly the expressions of the whole piece and it it written under the notes.
In Synfire, the expressions are lines written thrue the symbols, not handy ?

On the Properties tab of the DD for Halion Sonic, press the Controllers button.  Next, assign Controller A to "1 Modulation".  Then enter a default value (e.g. 64) and tick the Reset button.  If you press the Test button, you should see the Mod wheel on Halion move to the value you entered.
