As a lifelong guitarist (15-61) that just was told by my doctor that the rotator cuff injury I have means I cant play guitar for a while, I am very thankful for Synfire.
As a young kid I always enjoyed making montages. Cutting out snippets of images and combining them in new meaningful ways was something I did a lot. And as a guitarist I enjoyed the experience of improvising.
As I read the manual and after watching all the videos, I can see that Synfire shares a lot in common with these things. I am excited to explore what fun Sunfire has in store for me ;)

Hi,
I think a good Vsti GM soundmodule for MAC computer is Halion to bypass the Cognitone GM start soundmodule
You can try out this https://www.steinberg.net/en/products/vst/halion_and_halion_sonic/trial.html ( oh you need a usb e-licencer for this)
If you try this Demo then you must make a DD (devicedescription) for General MIdi in Synfire

Thanks for the info, but Im quite happy with the Apple DLS GM module I replaced the basic sound module with. And even though I have Miroslav Harmonik 2 and Chris Hein Horns Compact, I think I will be using Synfire GM insturments for just a scratch mix. When I finish and import its midi file into Studio One I will use the best samples I can for the final mix down. :)

Haha..how sounds work in Synfire, yes can be confusing and there are some types of DD ( device descriptions)
There is rack and there is (sound)module(a Vsti) loaded in this rack with a connected device description(DD) to it.
Mostly is this a fixed sound DD, so you must also assign your wanted sounds to each of the slots of the rack ( this is done automatically by a device description for General Midi..all 16 slots are occupied )
Very easy is when you can automatically extract a DD fora Vsti synth, but this not the case for kontakt Vsti, because it is a sampler.
And then..
Load this rack into the arrangement screen and assign there to every instrument channel the rack you like with the right sound
Note: with all the information on the Cognitone website you are not be able to understand how sounds (assigning) work ?..amazing..haha=lol

Yes, the wealth of information at the website is very helpful. Since getting Synfire just 2 days ago, the info has been key in helping me understand a quite a bit about this complex program. As a video editor for 35 years (https://www.facebook.com/tom.daigon) I have used compkex softwarea lot, some just have a steeper learning curve then others. ;)

It is also possible to work with a cognitone (midi)drone direct in Studio one
You can compose in Synfire and at the same time in your DAW with the vsti there.
Synfire and your DAW are connected at the same time
Further with a loopbackdriver http://users.cognitone.com/wiki/synfire-and-cubase-8-pro-loopbackdriver-windows
