playing with a pro feature external sync MTC. In the brand new online help : Synfire installs a ReWire device called Transport that allows for most DAW to be controlled remotely. Most Daw s today skipped rewire.
But forget Rewire. Pro Tools can send MTC with synchronisation enabled . Reaper will slave to this MTC . (See this video)
Protools and Reaper The Synfire online Help is minimal and will not help you to get it working. Using a Virtual midiport to send MTC to Reaper. (see settings in JPG) . Be sure to set the clock icon on top to on
Edit: Andre It is realy sync. The from piano midi in DAW playing exact in sync with the track in Synfire 2. Will try Ableton 11
I can't quite agree with that. The fiddling around with MIDI sync is a pain.
As long as there is no adequate replacement solution for Rewire, I have to use an old Cubase version. Or I'll switch to FL Studio. This can be loaded as a VST plugin in Synfire and then it synchronizes automatically. Works great.
It is not Midi Sync ( Midi clock or Ableton sync). It is Smpte clock for midi. (Midi TimeCode) . SMPTE used in Broadcast and Film/Video. LTC (analog SMPTE) superieur to MTC. For SDI video (broadcast) you have RP-188 or D-VITC . (Digital Vetical Interlaced Time Code) .
Andre , Synfire Transport in the Daw that still support Rewire (Reaper 6.7) not working ? . So the only way to have Ableton 11 , Cubase 12 slave to Synfire is MTC . Is MTC included in Express 2? On your comparison page it is Basic. ??????????
Andre Thanks for the new YT video Synfire 2: Figure (2on figures with KIM the (blonde) AI assistant without any Emotion. The step in the Bass notes because of the Harmony seems to be solved by connecting the Bass Symbols. Nice
Synfire Transport in the Daw that still support Rewire (Reaper 6.7) not working ?
ReWire with Reaper requires the Transport ReWire module to be loaded in the DAW (most DAWs don't need this). If I remember correctly, there should be a video for this.
Is MTC included in Express 2?
Yes. "Basic" merely means there is no configurable protocol. We will include more sync protocols over time and Pro users will have the ability to combine them.
in your new video you are talking about the figure for vertical scale. But your AI is not programmed to understand what in music this is. I will help you with a google search because it is advanced music theory:
The concepts of vertical vs. horizonal in music
If you look at a sheet of music: the "lines" go horizontally, while the "chords" are stacked up vertically. Horizontal, then refers to music as a group of lines (i.e. a voice-leading approach), and vertical refers to music as a series of chords (i.e. a harmonic approach).
Whoever told you that music is horizontal and NOT vertical was either simplifying the truth or was dead wrong. It is the interplay between horizontal and vertical elements of music that makes it interesting.
There is also the question of whether "harmony" is equated to the simple
concept of "chord", or whether it refers to the dynamic relations amongst
the notes in a piece of music--regardless of whether they are sounding
simultaneously or successively
KIM are you still there! hope that cleared up any confusion. I will wait for a future video from you how this is used in Synfire .
You should think of the idea of horizontal and vertical scales as implemented in Synfire more in terms of the Chord-Scale Theory as seen in jazz.
The basic idea is that in solos played quickly (or in arpeggios), the notes being played do not necessarily need to belong to the current major or minor key. For fast solos (as opposed to slow melodies), more exotic scales can be used without hurting the ear.
There is also the question of whether "harmony" is equated to the simple
concept of "chord",
Absolutely right, a harmonic step of a progression never consists only of the chord. In Synfire this is called Harmonic Context and always consists of a global key, the current relative key, the chord, the horizontal scale and the vertical scale. This information is visible in the palette window (below the circle of fifths) when you click on a chord. Thus, the same chord can belong to different harmonic contexts within a composition. For example, clicking on the C major chord in the C major palette displays different information in the harmonic context than clicking on the C major chord in the F major palette.
Absolutely right, a harmonic step of a progression never consists only of the chord
From the Synfire manual:
the absolute pitch results only through the playing range of the instrument, the harmonic
context, and other infuences in the immediate environment.
and
Turquoise Vertical Scale Middle line denotes the root tone of the vertical scale
I think it will be a very long video from Kim to explain what is going on with the Turguoise figures and the green Chord figures in Synfire. She ( or it) had to start in a DAW with a miditrack with notes/chords also in Staff notation with Roman Numerals . The Synfire figures will come later in the video .
For the root container, the Time Ruler in the Track View always shows only 4 bars. From bar 5 it is truncated, no matter how long the root container is or how long the phrases in it are. From bar 5 on, you can therefore no longer position the playhead in the track view when the root container is selected.
Other containers can also be affected by this behavior, but not all. I have not yet found out a systematic. First I thought that this applies to all containers that are longer than 16 bars, but that's also not always true.
I want to point you to a couple new phrase poools in the reviewed libraries.
Example Piano: Phrases/Piano (Melodic)/Counterpoint (Soft)
Drawn with the Line tool. Very easy to do leading to great results. If you change the symbol type and transpose segments you'll get a lot of variations that make sense. Try different progressions. We'll make a video using this phrases as an example.
Example Piano: Factory Generated/Fast Chord Lines
Several pools that make extensive use of the Relative symbol type. Try using these with half tempo and/or strings/voices. Enable "Tie Notes" (Interpretation) to eliminate repeated notes first.
@janamdo I am also a beginner, for these questions, I can recommend you and all intrinsically motivated users reading the well written documentation and watching several YouTube videos. The concepts require certainly some effort to be understood and worked out, I think Andre provided everything ready to make us go.
As these are Synfire-specific concepts, it is of course important to ask oneselves these questions. In the intererst of not unnecessarily burdening busy developers, however, it might be best to first made sure we read the manual and then mainly ask what was left unanswered by it?
With Synfire v1 and ReWire, MIDI sync has been an extra option. Now it's the only method that works, so we had to enable it for Express. Pro might offer additional and more sophisticated sync options in the future, like ARA, Ableton Link, OSC, whatnot. Depends on what works.
How can the "focus on" could be achievend on Synfire 2 Pro, windows, like in this video: at 7:37, also the click board at 6:12? Also, there some issues with the undo function, like when importing a figure into arrangement and modifying smth, then hiting undo replaces the figure with the previous one imported rather than undoing the modification itself.
Hello just wanted to point to a few issues, the "zoom vertical extents" button causes the zoom increase and decrease buttons to stop working in the structure view. [image structure_view_zoom.png]
The other issue might be a matter of me lacking the knowledge but I am finding it difficult to change the instrument of a snippet once it has been created and find the only way is to recreate it from the beginning with the desired instrument.[image snippet_instrument_change.png]
Another issue is that with the new way of doing interpretation I find that all my old songs are broken and sound very different. Perhaps a way to use the legacy interpretation for backwads compatibility and more musical options might be good.
One last issue is that I'm still not seeing the old way of quantizing to compound rhythms in the phrase editor where you used to be able to select a compound rhythm and quantize to it.[image compound_grid_quantize.png]
Anyway, I hope you're doing well and thanks for your attention.
There is still an unresolved issue where toolbar buttons are covered by other parts of the UI when window size is too small. Adding some indicator might help, but it's hard to implement with the current UI framework.
The zoom lock-in has been fixed.
I am finding it difficult to change the instrument of a snippet once it has been created
You can edit Snippets also on the Structure page. There you can move (cut/paste) phrases between instruments easily. Select the desired Snippet on the grid after making it visible. However, if the instrument is already set up, just move the snippet on the grid.
I'm still not seeing the old way of quantizing to compound rhythms
Right-click on the Grid outlet and pick a compound template.

Clarify again what is so special about this Relative Symbol and what Fast Chord Lines are in general to name something.
The user of the example library will need to know exactly what the phrases stand for , otherwise it is useless
