A means of extending the three actual ranges (lower, middle and upper) would be greatly appreciated.
By example, the tonal ranges from Arthur Lange's spectrotone are based on 8 categories, though each instrument doesn't possess the 8 different tonal categories.

The playing ranges of Synfire however, are strictly in the pitch domain. If I didn't miss something, the spectrotone thing is more about timbre.

Well the spectrotone is about tone and timbre
There are 10 tonal categories associated with the pitch range of instruments and linked meaningfully across instruments by colors.
Then for each category is associated particular timbre descriptions.
