How long to import a static midi?

Posted

I'm importing a midi file in 'static' mode. SFP seems hung up on one section.  It's been over 20 minutes.  Yet if I look at "Activity Monitor app".  SFP is still processing, it hasn't crashed..  I don't want to quit, (just before it would have finished), yet I would like some kind of indication SFP is not hung up in a loop.

I thought that static imports went significantly faster (this has been my experience).

I did just quit the import, and got a crash report, which I sent in..  it was a karaoke file.. But Logic handles them the same as a straight midi file..

I'll try importing into quicktime and exporting as midi... maybe that will work..

Yes, static should be very fast. What does the small console log say? Where is it at?

Just did more checking with Quicktime pro and QMIDI Pro.  Although QP QMIDI Pro will both play the .kar file.  When I export it as midi,  the file ends up as 0 bytes long. QT locks up on loading, and QMIDI Pro gives me an 'end of file error'..

Although I have two .kar files, I think someone started with the first one and made some alterations.. Both versions get an 'end of file' error, and SFP locks up at

'recognized 64504 Melodic Segments' on the Pizicat track.

I just successfully imported midi file by importing all tracks except the pizicat track, it imported very quickly of course..

So there must be something wrong within the pizicat track...

As Gilda Radner from the original Saturday Night Live show back in 70's often said in her skits, 'never mind'...

Andre:

This newest version of SFP looks excellent, you've got to get the nomination of most hardworking programmer in the world..

Thanx...

Change the file extension from *.kar to *.mid (if that's what OSX uses). Works on Windows.

Hi Prado:

Yes I do that, this particular file had an 'end of file error'... meaning one of the notes didn't have the proper 'hex' number after it to confirm to software, the data was valid... You can also take Band-in-a-box and Yamaha style arranger files ending with .sty - rename the extension to .mid, and SFP can read that too. The style file (depending on source, BIAB, Tyros 4 etc) consists of up to twelve multi media sequences, most of the sequences have up to 8 insturments in them..

They can make for some interesing library material. Their are 4 intro sequences, 4 main body sequence, and 4 ending sequences.  sequence 1 in each case being the simplist, sequence 4 being most complicated.  The main body sequences are generally jamming on one chord, and that gets transposed to proper key by software. Tyros and BIAB acting much the same way SFP does.. The intros and endings however can be any number of bars long, and even have a number of chord changes.  A lot of the styles using intros and endings from well known songs.  So you can really get the 'flavor' of a particular song.

Hi Janamdo:

I have done it and it works,  Here I have taken a T4 style file.. changed the extension name to mid, and imported it into SFP library.

If they are all coming up as the same midi channel for you , you're doing something wrong. You could change each gouping, (GM drumkit, GMLead2, etc)  to a new midi channel.. I used to have that problem at first, don't remember what I did,

On library import, you would want to 'retain midi channels'.  I select use "Tyros 4" for 'import for Device'  Andre made a device list for Tyros 4, it's on this site somewhere.  But I see no reason why you couldn't select any multi midi channel device.

Hope this helps!

Hi Mark

Glad for you that this is working for you.
I try out your enclosed files.

Ok i see you now what you mean ... i open the coglib file and i see that the double instruments are labelled!

phrase_instrumentnumber.jpg the instruments do not have all the same midi channels

Hi Mark

I've tried this with BIAB .sty files but SFP reports 'Unexpected end of file encountered'.  This is even before starting the import, just by selecting it in the Open Standard MIDI file window shows the error.

Are there only certain BIAB .sty files that can be imported do you know?  I tried several but with the same results.  One of them was PopBall4.sty for example.

Or maybe I've misunderstood you comment?

Some files have this issue, try some other BIAB styles.  Same with MIDI files you download from internet there will be a bogus file.. Got corrupted somehow.  I was originally having this issue with SFP hanging up on a pitzacatto track from an internet midi file.. When I tried to load it into Logic, I got the 'end of file' error.

So I tried importing it again into SFP, unchecking the corrupted track.  it worked fine..

Try opening your suspect file it in a DAW and see what it does. (you are changing .sty extension to .mid right?)

I have successfully imported both BIAB .sty and  Yamah .sty (they are the same format)..

Send me the bad .sty file..  Not that I'm an expert in it.. but I want to check..  I haven't loaded a real lot of BIAB files, but those I did gave me no problem.

Try some different BIAB files, or go to this site for Yamaha styles

This site has a lot of Yamaha styles.. same thing - rename .sty to .mid to import into SFP

Synfire imports STY natively (although the file extension may be case sensitive on the Mac). Some of its contents will get lost if you rename it to MID.

Please be careful with posting copyrighted midi files here. Exchange those privately where possible, or point to web sites. We have no resources to check their legal status unless you created them yourself.

I tried opening it in Cubase but nothing happened (i.e. no error message, just nothing).  Yes I changed to .mid

Send me the bad .sty file

I'm not sure how to do that so I've attached the changed .mid file (it won't let me attach .sty)

Thanks for the link, I'll give it a try :)

Whoops, I forgot about that, I've removed it now!

Mark, I can see your email on your website, I'll email it to you now.

Yes I noticed that Synfire recognises .sty but the same error is given.  I'll just have to try a few more I suppose.

You mean 'then' not 'than' :)

Yes supposedly, but I can't get any of them to work as they all give the error

Thanks for the language correction as you noticed.. i am not a native speaker in English
I mixed it with my own language :)

Time that Cognitone supports import for the BIAB style files ?

Ah yes ofcourse but thought to chance it in a midi .. but i don't have Band in a Box now

I have to retract my statement.. I also checked quite a few BIAB files.. Even in the selector box, it says.. 'end of file' error.

I'm sorry for the MIS informations..

I was able to import a number of Yamaha '.sty' files..  Just directly open it, no need to change extension.

I was positive two years back, I could also open BIAB files. and also load them into Tyros. All the BIAB sty files I tried to open were included in BIAB 2013..  Unless they changed the format, to make them proprietory.

Here is a  Yamaha arranger site

There are quite a number of free programs written by Jørgen Sørensen.  They are PC only..  I'm pretty sure there is a app there which will clean up BIAB files..

For now you can go with Yamaha Styles - and as Andre said, you don't even have to rename them.

Yamaha styles available from

This site has a wealth of information not only about Yamaha arranger kbds, but midi in generall There are over 20+ free PC programs, plus links to more sites..

This has quite a large number of free midi styles,, made by club members.  There is also a 'performer' section. I am listed there with a number of songs I done using Tyros - Mark Styles

Also just 'google' yamaha styles, Tryos styles, etc..  There are thousands and thousands out there.. ranging from kind of OK to Very good..

Again sorry I mistakenly gave out bad informations concerning BIAB sty

I'm changing my statement again..  I have a whole folder of BIAB styles that do work...  Someone at PSR Tutorial, must have used one of the free PC programs, to properly convert them..

Currently I can't log into Box.net, but when I can I'll put up the folder

Thanks Mark

Try to find this converting program then..for using biab styles
I am looking for a while how to compose a electric guitar what is rocking and HALion5 has those guitars
Remember a physical modelled guitar Vsti that sound even better.

Here is a link to some arranger styles

These have been modified to work.  I don't know which  program on PSR is the one to use.. Although I have Windows 7 on my Mac,, I try to avoid it as much as possible. (been a mac owner since Mac II - 30+ Years)

Native Instruments makes a program called 'guitar rig' which can take a guitar signal (from Real Guitar for example) and put any kind of electric guitar effect possible..  Real guitar (from Music lab) is not a modeling but a sample player..It adds the necessary artifacts, and has a large library of rhythms.  I forget the modeling guitars, but yes they are generally better.

Have you checked out modart's piano? it is modeling, and extremely small in size.  it comes with a number of add-ons..  electric piano, vibes, celeste, marimbe, steel pans.. It's expensive but the free demo is only missing 6 notes (very high and very low).. So if your song is not in a # key, you're fine.. Even in a 'wrong' key, as long as you have other instruments playing, you never miss it.

I've been using the demo for years.. You have to unload and reload the plug-in into your DAW after 20 minutes..  If it wasn't so expensive, I'd buy it in a heart beat.
