Changing of GM library

Posted

I try now to start with Synfire Express to chance the windows GM library global rack into a HALion5 GM library global rack, but it goes not smooth yet

So my startingpoint is now to chance from library
What is the procedure for this ?

Make the Halion device GM capable (has some dynamic channels and a GM bank), connect it to a rack module, assign its sounds to the global instruments - done.

Don't care about the sound names appearing next to the 'Used' lamps on the device. Dont try to make a particular sound name appear there on a channel. Synfire manages this for you. Only care about the instruments in your arrangements.

Synfire starts default with a windows gm dd global rack... i make a GM dd for HALion5 global rack

Both global racks are connected now ..now i must chance from windows gm rack to HALion 5 rack for the library ?
Don't see that when i choose HAlion5 GM rack that there coming out sounds from the HALion5 soundmodule..it seems that the windows gm synthesizer still is in use. ( it must be changing two audiodrivers : a windows and one for HAlion, but that is not possible..both audiodrivers are connected with the respective  dd )..or do i miss here something?

When i choose HAlion5GM as global rack ..both racks are lit (green device triangle) in the audio@midi setup, but the windows gm synth is playing
What i did earlier is than to bypass the windows GM synth ?..but i follow your instructions

Note : yes, dynamic channels are all the time allocated for new arrangements

Yes, and now comes when i trigger a piano sound from the library again..a red message that Internal GM synth rack is not to find (i removed it)

So when i now activate the knob accept ... the library must be re assigned to the HAlion5 GM soundmodule..but still no library to hear ..haha
What is going wrong here ? .. has it to do with the Windo's Gm device, what still holds the audiodriver..or not

Even with probe in the arrangement window ..no music out of HAlion5 and if the piano is assigned it shows up in HAlion5( but not now)
Now i investigate this more systematic by the library use

Ok solved ..there was no asiodriver for HALion5 installed in Synfire ( due earlier testing)  via steinberg asioserver, now the Library is working with HAlion5 when i activate the audiodriver
For a new install as reminder : remove the GM windows rack and keep the device ...

No still in problems..the library uses only now the piano sound ..haha ..must a assign the HAlion5 GM soundmodule as a global instrument ?

I don't know what yet is going on
Well show my all steps to get this 100 % working.. i don't know it yet anymore

Note: it seems even be worser than the old Synfire for now the soundassigning the HALion5 as GM soundmodule for the library

I must laugh about his whole issue, luckily i can relativate it ..haha

Please show my the steps that i can use the HAlion5 GM soundlibrary and on the same time this rack can be used for arrangements, because it is a global rack.

Ok,  i just start Synfire now up ( and the compuer too), to look again after to have been this afternoon in the gym for the "library problem", but now i get all correct allocated sounds.
So to do the setup as @Supertonic advised  works 100 % and the library of Synfire is now driven by the HALion5 GM soundmodule

Note: the library phrases are with the correct allocated sounds only in the library , BUT when i play the phrase with the transport controls ..there is a piano sound allocated

DRUMS are also not working--> solution? : make a reserved channel in the device description for channel 10 -> solved now ..the drums are allocated
I was too optimistic ..haha

This is a old problem in Synfire that the library phrases dragged into the arrangement don't have the library sound allocated--> NO  i start over with a empty arrangement and a NUll sound..now i can drag the library sound with the right allocated sound.

But when there is already a phrase with a allocated libraysound..replacing with a new phrase and other sound is not possible --> i must first make the phrase sound on NUll and than i can add a different phrase
Or is there a other way to this ? --> make a NUll sound in the library and drag this on the phrase..how about that?

The midi import must now work also 100 %--> yes works great with the automatic doubled sounds allocation

There are some issues with HAlion5 and Synfire express what has 16 instruments

First :

This is a old problem in Synfire that the library phrases dragged into the arrangement don't have the library sound allocated--> NO  i start over with a empty arrangement and a NUll sound..now i can drag the library sound with the right allocated sound.--> NO ...doesn't either  working

Is therea solution for this ?

Secondly : i like also to us mixed mode for GM sounds : problem is that the list of current alllocated channels add dynamic channels to this list when i load several midi and say i end up with a imported midi with  2 sounds--> it should handy if the list show the allocated sounds ( in bold ) of the active arrangement.

Thirdly :  i like to listen to the phrases to eachother without the need to load them in the arrangement : a second composing library also in SynfireExpress

Another problem ..i have add a HALion5 GM device to the global rack, but now i want add a native ( not GM) sound to the global rack

The rack is not showing what devices( using the rack) are in the rack ..or do i miss something?

I made a global rack for Halion5GM ..and it is automatically named at the top of the rack : HALion5GM ..but it is global rack..with a global name

I must set up a mixed -mode device description for HAlion5 and the GM soundbank and the Native sounds are considered as one device ?
I do have a Halion5 GM soundmodule device inside HAlion5 itself ..and if i extract a Halion DD description ..what sounds are there from ? ( Are the GM sounds included ? )

@Supertonic wrote

Create a new (shared) DD for Halion by pressing the + button under the device list on the shared rack (Audio & MIDI Setup window, or in the arrange window, as you did). Select '16-Channel Multi'.

Enter the device name, manufacturer, etc. For example 'Steinberg', 'Halion5', 'Factory Presets'.

On the Connectors tab you can switch individual channels to fixed and setup the sound properties.

You can add more connectors, if you want to run multiple 16-channel instances. Each connector can have its own channel setup.

On the 'Programs' tab, add a bank named 'GM Sounds' and from the popup menu initialize it with the 128 standard values.

Now you have a mixed-mode device that has some dynamic, some fixed channels.

try to find a contradiction  :?

I must make a device description for the native Halion5 sounds ..but how ?

Ok i managed to assign a fixed sound ( picked this out the HALion5 soundmodule ) in the HAlion5 GM device description , but it is used now ( no green field with used on it when i probe this sound, but mayb with phrase?

It is a easy setup only on the global rack, you cannot see what sounds are allocated to the global rack and if i use a mixed mode device description.

14 channels Multi-timbral , 128 programs, 1 sound on fixed channels-> from what device ?

Can this also be seen in the allocated channels in the instrument sound tab : type of channels
