Data Thinning?

Posted

Welcome to yet another of my "Can Synfire do this?" posts:

Can Synfire thin out a range of symbols so that only every other (or every third, fourth, etc) symbol is sounded?

This would be useful in order to start with a sparse (thinned out) instrument or arrangement and later change to the full instrument or arrangement.

Thanks.

You could create some suitable phrases to use on the pause parameter and put them in your library. Could even have some that are 'random' pauses to really mix it up.

I guess my stumbling block is how to tell Synfire which symbols in any specific phrase are "every other" and should thus be paused (muted). Synfire would have to have some automated way of detecting the proper symbols to pause, because designating these manually would generally be tedious.

I made a preset in which Pause alternates on/off every 1/8 note, and another in which Pause alternates on/off every 1/4 note. I tried these on several phrases, and it's hit or miss. On some phrases it does yield a "thinned out" sound and is musical. On others it just sounds clumsy.

Still worth a try.

Synfire 2.0 will have a mute tool to mute individual figure symbols, and a new Skip parameter that will alter rhythm (albeit not relative advancement of the symbols). Pause can be configured for Factories to thin out any output based on rhytmical properties. And it will allow for any parameter to be saved and recalled as a preset.

Until then, the Pause trick you suggested will do.

Exciting stuff. I recall that you wrote earlier about the mute tool. That was (and is) one of my most wanted features.

Thank you.
