Follow Chord Progression in Realtime

Posted

This is a feature that Scaler  has (called Keys Lock) that I would love to see in Synfire. Not sure if this is already possible, but I'd like to have the option to play melodies that sync to the chord progression in real time. This would make it easier to improvise melodies that fit into your composition before recording a take.

There is a switch on the Take inspector 'Snap input to harmony' when you are recording or playing along

I've been trying to use this feature, but it doesn't seem to work with what I'm trying to accomplish. The way this works I can only hear the result AFTER I've recorded a figure. I don't hear my notes snapping to the chord progression while I'm playing. What I'd like to be able to do is play an arrangement and jam along with it while hearing the results in real time without having to wait until playback to hear the result.

The current take options seems to only work after I've already recorded a phrase.  I check "Live Chord Detection" under the Progression tab, But I'm not hearing any results in real time. Also, the "Live Chord Detection" option unchecks itself every time I stop recording. So I have to keep rechecking every time. I want this to stay checked until I decide I don't want to use it anymore. Maybe there is a bug with this feature? Or maybe there's something I'm doing wrong.

I don't see that, I see input for harmonizer in the Take inspector, but I see in Audio/Midi setup window / input , input to harmony to check or not!

To check "Snap Input to Harmony" click the red circle in the Take inspector. It looks like a record button. A the bottom you will see this option.

I would attach a screenshot, but for some reason I can get the Print Screen function to work on my OS.

Perhaps you will have better luck with this feature that I have so far.

Thanks! I see the red circle. When try now I can record and I hear my piano komp track as I record a oboe take. I am on Mac.

Have you been able to get your input to follow the chord progression?

To get an idea of what I'd like to be able to do, this is from a Scaler tutorial demonstrating the Keys Lock feature (starting around the 17 minute mark):

Notice how even though he plays repeatedly plays the same notes in the piano treble section, they change in real time depending on the chord. Later, you can see him playing the same melody in real time with the rest of the composition.

No, I did't try that, I only try static playing. I will try that tomorrow. I know that scaler could do that.

Midi Through needs to be enabled to hear your input in real time. Incoming notes snap to the scale (not chord) of the moment. Voice leading is applied only after recording finished.
