Generate New Variation Only On Selected Span

Posted

Hi,

I notice that I can select a span and clear a portion of a generated Variation.

For example, turning this:

into this:

I've cleared the first 2m of the Variation to keep the original in that 2m, and I have a change to audition in the 2nd 2m.   If I like that change, then I'm done.   All well and good.

But suppose I want to proceed, keeping the original 2m (as shown above) and aiming to generate another Variation in the 2nd 2m.

As it happens, (re)generating the 2nd 2m also regenerates the first 2m, and I have to again go thru the motions of clearing the first 2m to audition the full 4m together.  This complex bit of motion may need to be repeated many times before the 2nd 2m is as desired.

The request is for New Variation to respect a selected span and only do it's thing there.

For example, running New Variation on this:

would just change the 2nd 2m, leaving the whole 4m instantly auditionable as desired with no further time/motion required.

Now, probably the current way to deal with this is to work with containers/sub-containers so that the "whole area" to which New Variation will do it's thing is actually only the desired area (2nd 2m in this example).

Nevertheless, I suggest that this request, to have New Variation operate only on a span (if there is a span) is probably the fastest and most intuitive way to approach this particular scenario.    Thanks!

Good idea because it's consistent with standard behavior, i.e. most editing commands are applied to the current selection, or if nothing is selected, to the entire parameter vector.
